Level (video gaming)

A level, map, area, stage, world, rack, board, zone, or phase in a video game is the total space available to the player during the course of completing a discrete objective. The term "level" can also refer to difficulty level, as in a degree of difficulty.

History

The use of levels in video games dates back to Namco's shoot 'em up Galaxian, released in 1979 during the golden age of video arcade games. The term level used during this era of arcade video games represented a difficulty phase or defined section of a given game, as in Galaga (stage 2) or Dungeon.

Another early example of the term "level" is from early role-playing games, where it referred to level of a dungeon—the setting most such games were played in. Players would begin at the bottom (level 1), and proceed through increasingly numbered levels (of increasing difficulty) until they reached their freedom at the top, or they would start at the top (which would also be level 1), and proceed through increasingly numbered (and difficult) levels until they reached the treasure at the bottom.

2012 in video gaming

The year 2012 saw the release of numerous sequels to critically acclaimed video games, such as Alan Wake, Asphalt, Assassin's Creed, Borderlands, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Darksiders, Dead or Alive, Diablo, Fable, Far Cry, Forza Motorsport, Halo, Hitman, Mario Party, Marvel vs. Capcom, Mass Effect, Max Payne, Medal of Honor, Modern Combat, Need for Speed, Ninja Gaiden, PlanetSide, Pokémon, Prototype, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Sniper Elite, Spec Ops, Super Mario, Tekken, The Darkness, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Transformers, Trials and X-COM. In addition, it saw the release of many new intellectual properties, such as Asura's Wrath, Dishonored, Journey, Lollipop Chainsaw and Sleeping Dogs. Many awards went to games such as Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Journey, Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It began with the worldwide release of Sony's newest handheld game console, the PlayStation Vita, that was launched in Japan in December 2011. The end of the year marked the worldwide release of the newest home console by Nintendo, the Wii U.

Games (magazine)

Games magazine (ISSN 0199-9788) is a United States magazine devoted to games and puzzles, and is published by Games Publications, a division of Kappa Publishing Group.

History

It was originally published by Playboy (debuting with the September/October 1977 issue), then in 1987 was acquired by PSC Limited Partnership for three years and then was briefly out of business in 1990 and 1991 after the PSC owners filed for bankruptcy. The magazine was bought and brought back to life in 1991 by the mail-order company "Bits & Pieces" based in Manhattan. Kappa Publishing Group acquired it in 1996 and moved the Games office to Kappa's headquarters in Pennsylvania. The magazine is published ten times a year (monthly, except for January and June).

Style

Throughout its publishing history, Games has differentiated itself from other puzzle magazines by its creative covers that are themselves puzzles, color sections containing feature articles and games, and a large variety of puzzle types, with wit and humor used throughout. Each issue contains a feature article and puzzles in its introductory color section, "Pencilwise", board and video game reviews in its closing color section, and "Wild Cards".

Games (Leo Ku album)

Games (遊戲 - 基) is an album by the Cantopop singer Leo Ku, released on November 28, 2003. The album is based on the theme of video games and was recorded in 2003 after Ku's two-year break from singing Cantopop. His current manager, Paco Wong, persuaded Ku to come back to Hong Kong's Cantopop scene. The songs 必殺技 ("Fatal Trick") and 任天堂流淚 ("Let Heaven Shed its Tears") won Ku numerous awards.

Games (House)

"Games" is the ninth episode of the fourth season of House and the seventy-ninth episode overall. It aired on November 27, 2007.

Plot

Cuddy orders House to make a final decision on which two candidates he's going to hire permanently. House visits Cameron in the emergency room to try to find a new case to help him make his decision and finds an uncooperative punk rock musician with a multitude of health problems. Although most of the candidates argue that the patient's woes are due to his high-risk lifestyle and drug abuse, House orders them to look into his symptoms, while scoring each doctor on a points basis.

A few months previously, Wilson had told one of his patients that the patient was going to die. However, he later finds a flaw in his diagnosis and that the patient is fine. The patient complains that he was planning to sell his house and now he'll have to cancel the sale and won't be able to afford to pay the real estate broker. Wilson tries to compensate the patient from his own checkbook but the man decides to sue Wilson. Wilson correctly deduces that House is the one who counseled the patient to sue Wilson.

Video (2 Plus 1 album)

Video is the ninth studio album by Polish group 2 Plus 1, released in 1985 by Savitor. The album was a follow-up to the highly successful 1983's Bez limitu and retained similar musical direction. The band have been working on this LP with popular songwriters Maciej Zembaty and John Porter, and the latter also contributed vocals in "Chińskie latawce". The album was preceded by the release of the single "Wielki mały człowiek" in 1984, which became the band's last big hit. Video hasn't been yet released in CD format.

Mitt Romney presidential campaign, 2012

The 2012 presidential campaign of Mitt Romney, the 70th Governor of Massachusetts, was formally announced on June 2, 2011 at an event in Stratham, New Hampshire. Having previously run in the 2008 Republican primaries, Mitt Romney's campaign in the 2012 election was his second bid for the Presidency of the United States.

He filed his organization with the Federal Elections Commission as an exploratory committee and announced the organization in a video message on April 11, 2011. He became the party's presumptive nominee with his victory in the Texas primary on May 29, 2012.

On August 11, 2012, in Norfolk, Virginia, Romney announced that his running mate for vice president was Paul Ryan, the U.S. Congressman for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district.

On August 30, 2012, in Tampa, Florida, Romney formally accepted the Republican Party's nomination at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Romney's campaign came to an end on November 6, 2012, upon defeat by incumbent President Barack Obama.
