Leslie Howard (born Leslie Howard Steiner, 3 April 1893  1 June 1943) was an English stage and film actor, director, and producer. Probably best remembered for playing Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1939), he also appeared in Berkeley Square (1933), Of Human Bondage (1934), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), The Petrified Forest (1936), Pygmalion (1938), Intermezzo (1939), "Pimpernel" Smith (1941) and The First of the Few (1942).

Howard's Second World War activities included acting and filmmaking. He was active in anti-German propaganda and reputedly involved with British or Allied Intelligence, which may have led to his death in 1943 when an airliner on which he was a passenger was shot down over the Bay of Biscay, sparking conspiracy theories regarding his death.

    Early life

Howard was born Leslie Howard Steiner to a British mother, Lilian (née Blumberg), and a Hungarian-Jewish father, Ferdinand Steiner, in Forest Hill, London. Lilian had been brought up as a Christian, but was also of partial Jewish ancestry—her paternal grandfather Ludwig Blumberg, a Jewish merchant originally from East Prussia, had married into the English upper middle classes. Howard was educated at Alleyn's School, London. Like many others around the time of the First World War, the family changed their name, using "Stainer" as less German-sounding. He worked as a bank clerk before enlisting at the outbreak of the First World War. He served in the British Army as a subaltern in the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, but suffered shell shock, which led to his relinquishing his commission in May 1916.

    Famous quotes by Leslie Howard:

"Terrible lot of nonsense... heaven help me if I ever read the book."
"Yesterday I put on my Confederate uniform for the first time and looked like a fairy doorman at the Beverly Wiltshire - a fine thing at my age."
"When I came here I knew I was coming here to shoot the ball, specifically the three."
"I don't think I could've scripted it any better for myself, but I've put a lot of work into shooting. I've kind of built my entire basketball career throughout my life on shooting, and the rest of it's just kind of fallen into place."
"We let down and they turned it up at the end. We had some bad decisions and that gave them the momentum."
"We knew February was going to be real tough. We've got three games left and we've got to find a way to win."
"I feel the pressure from other people coming at me. When shots don't fall for one person I think it is a domino effect."
"What started out to be a real successful season, we've got to somehow pull it together."
"We know what that's going to be. It's going to be tough."
"Now, we're saying, as soon as we know someone is homeless or vulnerable to being homeless, get them in housing, and then work on their other problems. So that's really the big shift, the big change."
