Les Damon

Lester Joseph "Les" Damon (March 31, 1908 – July 21, 1962) was an American character actor best known for his nearly 30 years performing on radio. Out of all his appearances on radio, Damon was best remembered for his roles as Nick Charles on The Adventures of the Thin Man from 1941-1943 and again from 1946-1950 on NBC then CBS and as Michael Waring on The Falcon from 1950-1953 on Mutual.

Early years

Damon was born Lester Joseph Damon on March 31, 1908, in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended and graduated from Brown University.

Early career

Damon began acting in the early 1930s traveling with different stock companies in and out of the United States. Damon first started acting with the Albee Stock Company in Providence. In 1934, Damon became an apprentice with the Old Vic Company in Lambeth, England. He remained there for a year until he came back to the United States.

Army

In 1943, Damon was drafted into the United States Military. He served in the Fourteenth Air Force of the Army Air Forces as a technical sergeant. Damon was stationed in the China Burma India Theater. He also served at the IBN outlet in Bhamo, Burma where he announced live spots between transcribed rebroadcasts of stateside programs, along with news broadcasts, interviews, and other assorted local features. Damon returned home in 1946. He was rewarded a Bronze Star for his service during World War II.

Damon and Pythias

In Greek historiography, Damon and Pythias (or Phintias) is a legend surrounding the Pythagorean ideal of friendship. Pythias is accused and charged of creating a plot against the tyrannical Dionysius I of Syracuse. Pythias makes a request of Dionysius that he be allowed to settle his affairs on the condition that he leaves his friend, Damon, as a hostage, so if Pythias does not return, Damon would be executed. Eventually, Pythias returns to face execution to the amazement of Dionysius, who because of the sincere trust and love of their friendship, then lets both Damon and Pythias go free.

Greek legend

As told by Aristoxenus, and after him Cicero (De Offic. 3.45), Diodorus Siculus (10.4), and others, Pythias and his friend Damon, both followers of the philosopher Pythagoras, traveled to Syracuse during the reign of the tyrannical Dionysius I (r. 405–367 BC). Pythias was accused of plotting against the tyrant and was sentenced to death.

Accepting his sentence, Pythias asked to be allowed to return home one last time, to settle his affairs and bid his family farewell. Not wanting to be taken for a fool, the king refused, believing that once released, Pythias would flee and never return.

Damon (novel)

Damon is a novel, written by Charles Terry Cline, Jr., about a four-year-old boy named Damon who begins to rapidly develop sexually into the equivalent of a full grown man. While still in the body of a four-year-old boy, excepting his genitalia, he quickly becomes a predator to every female that comes within his grasp: his playmates, his nurse, and even his own mother. At the same time he exhibits immensely bizarre psychological abilities including some of the seemingly super-natural variety, such as telepathy and remote viewing. In one instance, he uses his remote viewing ability to watch a rescue group discover the body of a neighboring young girl he violently raped and left to die. The question for the protagonist doctor working closely on the case becomes, is Damon possessed by the mind of a sexual psychopath? Or is his body simply the victim of a logical but strange, purely physical malady?

7L & Esoteric (7LES) are an underground hip-hop duo from Boston, Massachusetts, known for battle rhymes and boom bap production. 7L is the duo's DJ/producer and Esoteric is the MC. 7L & Esoteric are both prominent members of underground hip-hop collectives Army of the Pharaohs and Demigodz, as well as being 2/3 of CZARFACE along with Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck.

History

Early Career (1993-1996)

The duo formed in 1993 when Esoteric DJed a hip hop show at a college radio station north of Boston. 7L, a DJ and producer who listened to the show, contacted Esoteric in the interest of collaborating. The two found they shared a common love of the golden age of hip-hop and decided to form a group.

After performing for some time in the Boston/Cambridge underground, the duo released their first single in 1996 as God Complex with MC Karma. The B-side, "Secret Wars", gained a lot of attention as Esoteric paid tribute to the heroes of Marvel Comics in rhyme form. This led to the release of the Rebel Alliance LP, featuring acts such as Virtuoso, Mr. Lif, and Force Five. Also at this time, the two dropped the God Complex moniker and became known as simply 7L & Esoteric.
