Speech tempo

Speech tempo is a measure of the number of speech units of a given type produced within a given amount of time. A common measure is that of syllables per second. Speech tempo is believed to vary within the speech of one person according to contextual and emotional factors, between speakers and also between different languages and dialects. However, there are many problems involved in investigating this variance scientifically.

Problems of definition

While most people seem to believe that they can judge how quickly someone is speaking, it is generally said that subjective judgements and opinions cannot serve as scientific evidence for statements about speech tempo; J. Laver has written that analyzing tempo can be "dangerously open to subjective bias ... listeners' judgements rapidly begin to lose objectivity when the utterance concerned comes either from an unfamiliar accent or .. from an unfamiliar language". Scientific observation depends on accurate segmenting of recorded speech along the time course of an utterance, usually using one of the acoustic analysis software tools available on the internet such as Audacity or, specifically for speech research, Praat,SIL Speech Analyzer or SFS.

Lento (Julieta Venegas song)

"Lento" (English: "Slow") is the second single from the third album by Mexican singer Julieta Venegas, called Sí. The song was named the 5th best song of the 2000s decade by Latin music website Club Fonograma.

Song information

The song was written by Coti Sorokin and Julieta Venegas. Julieta plays the accordion, drum machine and keyboards on the track. It made the Billboard chart, and reached positions 31 and 13 on the Hot Latin Songs and Latin Pop Airplay respectively. Julieta performed a new version on piano for her MTV Unplugged in 2008. Erika Martins Brazilian singer performed a cover of this song in Portuguese in 2009, and sings a few bars of the song in Spanish position in the lists of popularity in Brazil.

The music video was filmed in Japan, and featured her twin sister Yvonne.

The video begins with Julieta Venegas walking the streets of Japan and following her sister Yvonne. The two are dressed in the same clothes and have the same hairstyle (except that Yvonne has shorter hair). Animated flowers and plants begin to grow each time Julieta goes through a street and on anything she touches. The video ends with the sisters playing a crane game.

Butterfly (Sara Tunes album)

Butterfly is the debut studio album by the Colombian singer-songwriter Sara Tunes. It was released on June 6 on Colombia and October 15, 2010 in Latin America by EMI. Butterfly was her third studio album, but counted as a debut album as the other two had not had the success expected.

Sara Tunes confirmed April 9, 2011 a tour that started in the U.S. and Canada, but Sara has not confirmed if the tour went through Latin America. The tour recorera by states like New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Boston, Florida and Orlando, among others. Tour is expected to start in late 2011 or early 2012.

Speech

Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It is based upon the syntactic combination of lexicals and names that are drawn from very large (usually about 1,000 different words) vocabularies. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. These vocabularies, the syntax which structures them, and their set of speech sound units differ, creating the existence of many thousands of different types of mutually unintelligible human languages. Most human speakers are able to communicate in two or more of them, hence being polyglots. The vocal abilities that enable humans to produce speech also provide humans with the ability to sing.

A gestural form of human communication exists for the deaf in the form of sign language. Speech in some cultures has become the basis of a written language, often one that differs in its vocabulary, syntax and phonetics from its associated spoken one, a situation called diglossia. Speech in addition to its use in communication, it is suggested by some psychologists such as Vygotsky is internally used by mental processes to enhance and organize cognition in the form of an interior monologue.

Speech (album)

Speech was the fourth (and final) album of the British blues-rock band Steamhammer.

In 1971, bassist Steve Davy left the band, and Louis Cennamo was recruited as his replacement - then vocalist Kieran White also left the band after a summer tour. Guitarist Martin Pugh, drummer Mick Bradley and Cennamo (with guest vocalist Garth Watt-Roy, of Fuzzy Duck) then went in the studio to record "Speech", which was released in 1972. It consisted of three lengthy (and mostly instrumental) songs in a heavier progressive-rock vein, that was somewhat different from their initial blues and folk/jazz-influenced albums.

Bradley died from leukemia shortly before the album's mixing was completed (the album is dedicated to him on the inside album cover), and the band dissolved the following year; making Speech their final album.

After Steamhammer wound down, Pugh and Cennamo joined up with former Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf (who had provided production assistance on "Speech", as well as contributing background vocals) and drummer Bobby Caldwell, formerly of Johnny Winter's band and Captain Beyond, to form Armageddon.

Public speaking

Public speaking (sometimes termed oratory or oration) is the process or act of performing a presentation (a speech) focused around an individual directly speaking to a live audience in a structured, deliberate manner in order to inform, influence, or entertain them. Public speaking is commonly understood as the formal, face-to-face talking of a single person to a group of listeners. It is closely allied to "presenting", although the latter is more often associated with commercial activity. Most of the time, public speaking is to persuade the audience.

Overview

In public speaking, as in any form of communication, there are five basic elements, often expressed as "who is saying what to whom using what medium with what effects?" The purpose of public speaking can range from simply transmitting information, to motivating people to act, to simply telling a story. Good orators should not only be able to engage their audience, but also able to read them. The power of a truly great presenter is the ability to change the emotions of their listeners, not just inform them. Public speaking can also be considered a discourse community. Interpersonal communication and public speaking have several components that embrace such things as motivational speaking, leadership/personal development, business, customer service, large group communication, and mass communication. Public speaking can be a powerful tool to use for purposes such as motivation, influence, persuasion, informing, translation, or simply ethos.
