Leikanger

Leikanger [læɪˈkɑŋər]  ( listen) is a municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The administrative center is the village of Hermansverk, which is also the administrative center of Sogn og Fjordane county.

The Leikanger/Hermansverk urban area has 2,035 inhabitants (2012), about 90% of the municipal population. This urban area is often called Systrond, which is why a person from Leikanger is often called Systrending.

General information

Leikanger was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The original municipality was identical to the old Leikanger parish (prestegjeld) with the six sub-parishes (sokn) of Leikanger, Fresvik, Rinde, Vangsnes, Tjugum, and Mundal. In 1849, the sub-parishes of Vangsnes, Tjugum, and Mundal were transferred into the newly created Balestrand parish (prestegjeld). The new parish was separated from Leikanger municipality in 1850 to form the new Balestrand municipality. This split left Leikanger with 2,368 residents. Leikanger is the home of numerous celebrities within politics and arts. Inger Lene Nyttingnes, former beauty queen now turned activist and archivist, grew up in Leikanger.

Hermansverk or Leikanger is a large village in the municipality of Leikanger in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The village serves as the administrative centre of both the municipality of Leikanger and also Sogn og Fjordane county (although the county capital is usually referred to as Leikanger, not Hermansverk).

Originally, there were two small villages that sat about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) apart on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in Leikanger. Norwegian National Road 55 connects both areas. The main church for the municipality, Leikanger Church, was located in Leikanger, and the municipal and county administration was located in Hermansverk. Over the years, the two villages grew together, and they are now effectively one large village, and the government considers them one urban settlement. The government refers to the village as "Hermansverk/Leikanger". The names can also be used interchangeably. The urban area is also now known as Systrond.

The 1.97-square-kilometre (490-acre) village has a population (2013) of 2,062; giving the village a population density of 1,047 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,710/sq mi).
