"Left & Right" is the second single from neo soul musician D'Angelo's album Voodoo. The song features guest vocals by hip hop duo Method Man & Redman who also co-wrote the song. The music video was directed by Malik Sayeed.

Background

A part of the musical collective Soulquarians, Dilla served as a frequent collaborator of theirs. Although album tracks such as "Left & Right" and "Devil's Pie" help to bring this claim to light, J Dilla himself was not officially credited for production. However, he contributed significantly to Voodoo's overall sound, specifically the rhythm and percussion. Q-Tip was originally intended to contribute a verse to the song "Left & Right", but was replaced by rappers Method Man & Redman during recording due to creative differences. Questlove has stated that "general opinion was that the song was cool but nobody was feeling Tip's verse". According to former A&R-man Gary Harris, D'Angelo's manager Dominique Trenier "thought that Tip’s verse was wack".

Left & Right is an album by jazz multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk. It was originally released on the Atlantic label in 1968 and features performances by Kirk with Jim Buffington, Julius Watkins, Frank Wess, Ron Burton, Vernon Martin and Roy Haynes with Warren Smith, Richard Williams, Dick Griffith, Benny Powell, Daniel Jones, Pepper Adams, Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Hopps and Gerald "Sonny" Brown featuring on an extended track and arrangements by Gil Fuller. The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek states "The title of this album, Left and Right, no doubt refers to the sides of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's brain, which were both heavily taxed in the composing, arranging, conducting, and playing of this recording... This is an extreme for Rahsaan — extremely brilliant and thoroughly accessible".

"Left, Right" was premiered on November 28, 2013 via Young Jeezy's #ItsThaWorld2 mixtape. It was official released for digital download on December 10, 2013 as the second single from his debut studio album My Krazy Life.

The song's production was constructed by YG's frequent collaborator DJ Mustard. It is based around a minimalistic three-note theme which doubles down with a fiddle midway through each verse.

Critical reception

"Left, Right" was met with generally positive reviews from music critics. Jordan Sowunmi of Now called it a "hedonistic jam sprinkled with distinctive California cultural markers." Dorian Mendoza of PrettyMuchAmazing said the song "can make every club in the nation shake." Jesse Fairfax of HipHopDX said the song is "sure to please his flesh chasing peer group entering early adulthood." Jesal 'Jay Soul' Padania of RapReviews compared the song's sound to executive producer Young Jeezy's debut album Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101. Michael Madden of Consequence of Sound stated that the song was very sex related, but engaging nonetheless.
