Leeds Inner Ring Road

The Leeds Inner Ring Road is part-motorway and part-A roads in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, which forms a ring road around the city centre. It has six different road numbers that are all sections of longer roads. Clockwise, the roads are the A58(M), a motorway section of the A58 road; the A64(M), part of the A64 road; the A61 between York Road and the M621; the M621 between junctions 4 and 2; and the A643 between the M621 and A58. The motorway section is in total is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) long and is subject to a 40 miles per hour (64 km/h) speed limit throughout.

Route

The motorway section of the ring road forms a semicircle around the north of the city centre. It is classified as a motorway to prohibit certain types of traffic and pedestrians but is not designed to modern motorway standards: it has no hard shoulders and many exits are unsuitable for a true motorway, including a right-side (fast lane) slip road exit. Most of it runs in a concrete-walled cutting, but it goes into a tunnel under the Leeds General Infirmary. The motorway cuts through inner-city neighbourhoods such as Woodhouse, Sheepscar, and Buslingthorpe, forming an important link in the road network by allowing traffic from the A65, A660, A58, A61 and A64 to bypass the city centre.

Inner Ring Road (Shanghai)

Inner Ring Road (Chinese: 上海内环线; pinyin: Shànghǎi Nèihuánxiàn; literally: "Shanghai Inner Ring Line"), also known as Inner Ring Elevated Road (Chinese: 内环高架路; pinyin: Nèihuán Gāojiàlù), is an elevated expressway in the city of Shanghai, China. It was the first ring road around the city of Shanghai. The Puxi section of the road was completely grade-separated and complete in 1994, while the Pudong section of the road was completely grade-separated in 2009. Before the grade separation in Pudong, the road ran at street level, with traffic lights at intersections.

The maximum speed on the expressway is 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph), with two lanes in each direction. The Inner Ring Road crosses the Huangpu River twice, using the Yangpu and Nanpu bridges.

Inner Ring Road (Tianjin)

The Inner Ring Road of Tianjin is a system of roads incircling the downtown of Tianjin, China. It is not an expressway in any way as the road user has to turn to get on to the next road and not exit. There are traffic lights or roundabouts at most intersections with other roads.

This road is extremely busy at most times of the day, even with the divided road having over 2 lanes in each direction with a separate bike lane, giving proof to how fast the economic growth of Tianjin is (many people have a car now, and taxis are everywhere, but there are still more bikes).

Inner Ring Road, Bangalore

The Inner Ring Road is an arterial city road in Bangalore, India. It is a six lane link road connecting Indiranagar and Koramangala. the Northern end of the road, beyond Old Airport Road from Domlur junction is called Indiranagar 100 Feet Road, Bangalore.

Inner and Intermediate Ring Road

A number of important companies in IT industry have their offices in the "Embassy Golf Links" just off the IRR close to HAL Airport.

A big flyover has been constructed at the Domlur Junction of the IRR and Old Airport Road. It has helped in the decongestion of traffic at the Domlur signal.

Route 1 (Iceland)

Route 1 or the Ring Road (Icelandic: Þjóðvegur 1 or Hringvegur) is a national road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,332 kilometres (828 mi). Some of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland, such as the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, are also on or near the Ring Road.

The ring was completed in 1974, coinciding with the 1100th anniversary of the country's settlement when the longest bridge in Iceland, crossing the Skeiðará river in the southeast, was opened.

Characteristics

For almost all its length, the road is two lanes wide: one lane going in each direction. Where it passes through larger towns, the number of lanes may be increased, as also in the Hvalfjörður Tunnel. Many smaller bridges are single lane, especially in eastern Iceland, and constructed of wood and/or steel. The road is paved with asphalt for most of its length, but there are still stretches in eastern Iceland with an unpaved gravel surface. The Iceland Road Administration, Vegagerðin, oversees the maintenance and building of both main roads and minor roads.

Beijing is one of the very few cities to possess multiple ring roads (or beltways).

1st Ring Road

When the city of Beijing had tram lines in operation from the 1920s to the 1950s, Line No. 4's route formed a ring-shaped loop, running 17-km clockwise through Tiananmen - Xidan - Xisi - Pinganli - Dianmen - Gulou - Jiaodaokou - Beixinqiao - Dongsi - Dongdan - Tiananmen. This route was known as the “Ring Road” (环形路). After the tramlines were removed in the 1950s, this name lost its meaning as it was simply a collection of surface streets (in contrast, each of the other ring roads today is a single expressway). Most maps in Beijing do not actually show the 1st Ring Road as such; only very few maps give a faint yellow highlight of a possible variant of it. However, the original name remained to be used later for other ring roads constructed decades later.

The notion of "1st Ring Road" briefly reappeared after the end of the Cultural Revolution, during which the original names of the roads described above were changed to names with strong political propaganda meaning that eulogized and advocated the ideologies of the Cultural Revolution, and when the political turmoil had ended, the names obviously had to be changed again. One suggestion was to completely rename those roads as "1st Ring Road" to symbolize the new start in the era of reform, as well as to reflect the willingness of China to embrace modernness and globalization, but this suggestion was quickly turned down because most people favored the original names of the roads and believed in their historical meaning and cultural heritage, and more importantly, they felt that returning the original names also had more symbolic meaning of denouncing Cultural Revolution. Therefore, the original names of the roads were adopted once again, and the phrase "1st Ring Road" was seldom heard again.
