RC2 Corporation

The RC2 Corporation, a division of Japan-based Takara Tomy, is a toy design, marketing, and distribution company headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, United States.

Company and history

RC2 markets brands such as The First Years and Lamaze. Its Learning Curve Brands subsidiary is dedicated to infant and preschool merchandise.

The company went public in 1997. By 2006, 91.8 percent of RC2’s products were made in China. In 2007, the company made headlines after it was forced to recall 1.5 million Thomas & Friends wooden toy trains after they were found to contain excessive amounts of lead. The toys involved in the recall had been manufactured in China.

RC2 was acquired by Takara Tomy in 2011.

Learning curve

A learning curve is a graphical representation of the increase of learning (vertical axis) with experience (horizontal axis).

The term learning curve is used in two main ways: where the same task is repeated in a series of trials, or where a body of knowledge is learned over time. The first person to describe the learning curve was Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, in the field of the psychology of learning, although the name wasn't used until 1909. In 1936, Theodore Paul Wright described the effect of learning on production costs in the aircraft industry. This form, in which unit cost is plotted against total production, is sometimes called an experience curve.

The familiar expression "a steep learning curve" is intended to mean that the activity is difficult to learn, although a learning curve with a steep start actually represents rapid progress.

In psychology

The first person to describe the learning curve was Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885. His tests involved memorizing series of nonsense syllables, and recording the success over a number of trials. The translation does not use the term learning curve—but he presents diagrams of learning against trial number. He also notes that the score can decrease, or even oscillate.

Stargate SG-1 (season 3)

The third season of the military science fiction television series Stargate SG-1 commenced airing on Showtime in the United States on June 25, 1999, concluded on Sky1 in the United Kingdom on March 8, 2000, and contained 22 episodes. The third continues the plot started in season one, the third season follows SG-1 in their fight against the Goa'uld Empire's System Lords, the main being Sokar until "The Devil You Know" and then Apophis after regaining power after the event in "The Devil You Know." The season introduces the long unseen and unnamed enemy of the Asgards, the Replicators who are self-replicating machines that seek to convert all civilizations into more of themselves, thus posing a dire threat to all other beings. The Replicators are first mentioned, but not named, in season three episode "Fair Game".

The one-hour premiere "Into the Fire", which debuted on June 25, 1999 on Showtime did not receive any syndication rating, but overall got a high viewership level. The series was developed by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, who also served as executive producers. Season 3 regular cast members include Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Don S. Davis.
