Le Tigre

Le Tigre is an American electroclash band from the United States, formed by Kathleen Hanna (formerly of Bikini Kill) and Johanna Fateman in 1998 in New York City. It also featured Sadie Benning from 1998 until 2001 and JD Samson for the rest of the group's run. Le Tigre is known for its left-wing sociopolitical lyrics, dealing with issues of feminism and the LGBT community.

History

Initially envisioned as a live backup band for Hanna's solo project Julie Ruin, Le Tigre mixed the politics and feminism of riot grrrl with electronic samples and lo-fi beats. Other members included Fateman and Samson. Samson joined Le Tigre as a full member when co-founder Benning left the band before touring the first album and Samson filled in for her on the tour and eventually joined the band full-time. Samson had previously worked with the band as a roadie and the operator of the band's slide show during the few live performances the band did in support of their first record before Benning's departure. The self-proclaimed "underground electro-feminist performance artists" combined visuals, music and dance in their performances. Samson is a gay rights activist, and the excerpts in "New Kicks" are from an actual protest that Samson recorded herself. Hanna is a public speaker, artist, and now plays with the band The Julie Ruin. Fateman is an accomplished writer and painter.

Le Tigre (clothing brand)

Le Tigre is an American brand of apparel designed to rival Lacoste in styling. First offered in 1977, Le Tigre polos sported a leaping tiger in lieu of Lacoste's signature crocodile and Retro Fox's leaping fox. The brand made a comeback in 2003, after being out of production through the 1990s. Le Tigre had become popular during the later 1980s; celebrities from Wilt Chamberlain, LL Cool J, and even Ronald Reagan were seen wearing the tiger. The company is based in New York City. Le Tigre has been a subsidiary of Kenneth Cole Productions since 2007.

    Le Tigre (album)

Le Tigre is the debut studio album of American music trio Le Tigre. It was released October 26, 1999 on Mr. Lady Records. The album combined pop music with the band's feminist political lyrics. It received positive reviews from music critics.

    History

Le Tigre was formed by Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman, and Sadie Benning. Hanna lived with Fateman while the two were in a band called the Troublemakers. Hanna had collaborated with Benning on a video for "Aerobicide" from Hannah's 1997 album Julie Ruin. The three of them originally planned to come up with a live format for Hanna's songs as Julie Ruin, but they transitioned into making music.

The band constructed songs using inexpensive electronic equipment. Fateman explained that they chose equipment with which they were unfamiliar to show "girl-punk scorn for that particular strain of male expertise associated with electronic music." Le Tigre produced the album with Chris Stamey of the dB's, who helped the band rearrange songs through digital editing. Hanna and Fateman knew the founders of Mr. Lady Records from their time in Portland, Oregon. They chose to release the album through Mr. Lady because of its political engagement. When Benning was unable to tour in support of the album, the band removed her from its lineup and added JD Samson.

    by: Le Tigre

I'm in the sky when I'm on the floor
The world's a mess and yr my only cure
There's no time for me to act mature
The only words I know are "more, more" and "more"
No one to criticize me then
    No one to criticize
No one to criticize me then
    No one to criticize
There's no fear when I'm in my room
It's so clear and I know just what I want to do
    All day bedroom dancing
    To you I wanna say
