Lay Your Hands on Me

"Lay Your Hands on Me" is a song written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora and recorded by the American rock band Bon Jovi. It was released in August 1989 as the fourth single from the band's 1988 album New Jersey. It peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's fourth single from New Jersey to chart in the Top 10 and it also charted at #20 on the Mainstream rock charts.

Song structure

The song runs 6 minutes, with a long intro focused on the drum beats of Tico Torres and keyboard playing of David Bryan as well as the chants of the crowd: "hey!", before going into an extremely hard rock song, filled with loud guitar riffs by Richie Sambora and the husky delivery of lyrics by Jon Bon Jovi. By Jon's own admission, this is one of the few Bon Jovi songs that was written from a guitar riff (Jon Bon Jovi's usual style is to begin writing a song with the title). It was written in the studio while they were recording the New Jersey album.

Music video

The video for this song was culled from performances at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, WA and the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR during The Jersey Syndicate Tour. It was also released to home video on New Jersey: The Videos and Cross Road: The Videos. The MTV video for "Lay Your Hands On Me" was shot in Salt Lake in May 1989.

Lay Your Hands on Me (Thompson Twins song)

"Lay Your Hands on Me" is a 1984 song by the British band Thompson Twins. It was the first single to be released from their 1985 album Here's To Future Days, and was released in the UK almost a year in advance of the album. It was written by Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie, and Joe Leeway. There are two main versions of the song, with various edits and remixes of the two. The first version was produced by Alex Sadkin & Tom Bailey was released in late 1984 in Europe and Australia. The 1985 version was a reworking co-produced by Nile Rodgers, adding electric guitar and a gospel choir and released as a single in the US (this version appeared on the album). The single peaked at #13 in the UK, spending nine weeks on the chart. The single fared better in America where it peaked at #6 on the US Billboard 100 and also peaked at #46 on the US Dance /Club Play Singles.

The B-side, "The Lewis Carol (Adventures In Wonderland)", is an instrumental variation of the song and was exclusive to this single.

Thompson Twins

Thompson Twins were a British music group that formed in April 1977 and disbanded in May 1993. Initially a new wave group, they switched to a more mainstream pop sound and achieved considerable popularity in the mid-1980s, scoring a string of hits in the United Kingdom, the United States, and around the globe.

The band was named after the two bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson in Hergé's comic strip The Adventures of Tintin. At various stages, the band had up to seven members though their best known incarnation was as a trio between 1982–86. They became a prominent act in the Second British Invasion, and in 1985, the band performed at Live Aid where they were joined onstage by Madonna.

Career

Early days

In 1977, the original Thompson Twins line-up consisted of Tom Bailey (born 18 January 1954, Halifax, Yorkshire) on bass and vocals, Pete Dodd on guitar and vocals, John Roog on guitar, and Jon Podgorski (known as "Pod") on drums. Dodd and Roog first met when they were both 13 years old.
