Laura Solon

Laura Madalene Solon (born April 1979) is an English comedian, actress, writer, and winner of the 2005 Perrier Comedy Award, only the second woman to win as a solo performer (the first being Jenny Eclair in 1995).

Background

She was raised in Great Kimble near Aylesbury. She attended Downe House School followed by Worcester College, Oxford where she received a scholarship to read English and started writing and performing in the Oxford Revue.

Career

Solon tried her hand at being a stand up comedian but found character comedy suited her better.

In 2005 she won the Perrier Award for her one-woman Edinburgh Fringe show Kopfraper's Syndrome: One Man and His Incredible Mind. Following this the BBC and Channel 4 were keen to acquire her to produce material for them, and in April 2006 it was announced by the BBC that Solon had been signed to develop projects for them on Radio and TV.

The first series of Laura Solon: Talking and Not Talking, a sketch and character comedy series, ran on BBC Radio 4 in January and February 2007. The second series ran in May and June 2008, and the third in November 2009.

Solon

Solon (Greek: Σόλων; c.638 – c.558 BC) was an Athenian statesman, lawmaker, and poet. He is remembered particularly for his efforts to legislate against political, economic, and moral decline in archaic Athens. His reforms failed in the short term, yet he is often credited with having laid the foundations for Athenian democracy. He wrote poetry for pleasure, as patriotic propaganda, and in defense of his constitutional reforms.

Modern knowledge of Solon is limited by the fact that his works only survive in fragments and appear to feature interpolations by later authors, and by the general paucity of documentary and archaeological evidence covering Athens in the early 6th century BC. Ancient authors such as Herodotus and Plutarch are the main source of information, yet they wrote about Solon long after his death, at a time when history was by no means an academic discipline. Fourth century orators, such as Aeschines, tended to attribute to Solon all the laws of their own, much later times.

Solonț

Solonț is a commune in Bacău County, Romania. It is composed of three villages: Cucuieți, Sărata and Solonț.

    Famous quotes by Laura Solon:

"I started writing the show in June and have been rewriting it ever since, seeing what works and what doesn't. I had some ideas for characters and have developed them, but most were entirely new."
"I think some offers have been made, but I really don't know about them. I will have to sit down with my manager and go through them when I've calmed down a bit. I'm still a bit thrown by it all."
"It was ridiculous even to be nominated with these people."
