LATAM (airline)

LATAM is the new brand resulting from the joining of two South American airlines, LAN, TAM and their respective subsidiaries. With its head office in Santiago Chile, the airline operates passenger flights out of South America, Central America, North America and the Caribbean, Europe and Oceania with a total of 135 destinations in 23 countries. Its cargo business provides freight services to over 144 destinations in 26 countries. Regarding traffic and coverage, it’s the largest airline in South America.

The new brand was announced on 6 August 2015 and was the result of an important merger and subsequent process integration and validation, flight connection optimization, restructuring and fleet modernization.

LATAM employs a staff of approximately 53 thousand and owns a fleet of 312, not including ordered and as yet undelivered planes.

History

LAN was founded on 5 March 1929 as Linea Aerea Nacional, a state run airline that soon became LAN Chile. After the opening of certain markets (which led to the creation of LAN Peru, LAN Argentina, and LAN Ecuador), the company changed name again becoming LAN Airlines in 2005. In 2011, LAN acquired the Colombian airline Aires which later became LAN Colombia.

LATAM (disambiguation)

LATAM may refer to:

  • Latin America, as an abbreviation
  • LATAM (Airline), the new airline brand created by the merger of LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines and its subsidiaries
  • LATAM Airlines Group, the airline holding created by a merger of LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines
  • LATAM Challenge Series, a race series based in Mexico
  • LATAM Airlines Group

LATAM Airlines Group S.A. is a Latin American airline holding company incorporated under Chilean law with its headquarters Santiago, Chile. The group also has offices in São Paulo, Brazil, with subsidiaries in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.

The airlines signed a non-binding agreement on 13 August 2010, a binding agreement on 19 January 2011, and papers to close the merger on 22 June 2012, with TAM shareholders agreeing to the takeover by LAN. Enrique Cueto, former CEO of LAN, is CEO of LATAM; Mauricio Rolim Amaro, formerly vice-chairman of TAM, is chairman.

The two airlines fly with separate liveries and certificates, a policy to be continued in the short term, but expect substantial synergies from merging their operations. However, in August 2015 it was announced that the two airlines would fully rebrand as LATAM, with one livery to be applied on all aircraft by 2018.

LATAM's competitors on the South American continent are: Synergy Group's Avianca Holdings; Copa Airlines; Gol Airlines; and Azul Airlines. LATAM is not an airline alliance, but is rather more akin to airline holding companies such as International Airlines Group and Air France-KLM.

    Latin America

Latin America is the group of territories and countries in the Americas where Romance languages are spoken. The term originated in 19th century France to include French-speaking territories in the Americas within the larger group of countries that speak Spanish and Portuguese. It is therefore marginally broader than the term Iberian America or Spanish America, though it excludes French-speaking Quebec. Latin America consists of twenty sovereign states and several territories and dependencies which cover an area that stretches from the southern border of the United States to the southern tip of South America, including the Caribbean. It has an area of approximately 19,197,000 km2 (7,412,000 sq mi), almost 13% of the earth's land surface area.

As of 2015, its population was estimated at more than 626 million and in 2014, Latin America had a combined nominal GDP of 5,573,397 million USD and a GDP PPP of 7,531,585 million USD. The term "Latin America" was first used in 1861 in La revue des races Latines, a magazine "dedicated to the cause of Pan-Latinism".

    Airline

An airline is a company that provides air transport services for traveling passengers and freight. Airlines lease or own their aircraft with which to supply these services and may form partnerships or alliances with other airlines for mutual benefit. Generally, airline companies are recognized with an air operating certificate or license issued by a governmental aviation body.

Airlines vary from those with a single aircraft carrying mail or cargo, through full-service international airlines operating hundreds of aircraft. Airline services can be categorized as being intercontinental, domestic, regional, or international, and may be operated as scheduled services or charters.

    History

    The first airlines

DELAG, Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft was the world's first airline. It was founded on November 16, 1909 with government assistance, and operated airships manufactured by The Zeppelin Corporation. Its headquarters were in Frankfurt. The first fixed wing scheduled air service was started on January 1, 1914 from St. Petersburg, Florida to Tampa, Florida. The four oldest non-dirigible airlines that still exist are Netherlands' KLM, Colombia's Avianca, Australia's Qantas, Polish AeroTarg, and the Czech Republic's Czech Airlines. KLM first flew in May 1920, while Qantas (which stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited) was founded in Queensland, Australia, in late 1920.
