Langrisser (ラングリッサー, Rangurissā) is a tactical role-playing video game series created by Masaya Games. The main development team is Career Soft, first as Team Career within Masaya Games and then as an independent studio. The series has a fantasy-Germanic setting, but draws on religious concepts like ditheism and sword worship for historical context. The Growlanser series is considered as the spiritual successor to Langrisser.
Gameplay in the Langrisser series is similar to many other tactical role-playing games. The game is divided into Scenarios, each of which reveals a portion of the story through battle interaction. Langrisser set itself apart from other tactical RPGs in its time with larger-scale battles, where the player could control over thirty units at one time and fight against scores of enemies.
At the outset of battle, military commanders are positioned on the game's map and units are hired. Combat always follows a system of turns. In the first two games, any unit can be moved at any time during your turn, but each unit can only be moved once. In the last two games, a clock was introduced and units were moved in turn according to agility. A unit's commander class dictates the radius of its command range. Units battling within this command range receive a bonus to their attack and defense due to proximity to the commander. Commanders can recover life using a specific command depending on the game. In the first game the Treat Command will recover 3 health points. In later versions of the game the Treat Command is replaced by the Heal command which recovers 3 health points (HP) and 2 magic points. A commander’s troops recover by being positioned directly around the commander. Each will recover 3 HP at the start of a turn.
Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei (ラングリッサー リインカーネーション -転生-) is a 2015 video game in the Langrisser series.
The game takes place in a flooded world and the story's protagonist is a man with the Sacred Sword Excalibur, looking to reunite himself with a childhood friend, while fighting the empire's army. The battle system is the same as known from other Langrisser titles, but with 10-on-10 battles fought by super-deformed 3D characters serving as units. The units consist of Infantry, Cavalry, and Archers.
Siliconera believes the game may have cyberpunk or steampunk elements, and that its setting has changed from the previous games' pure medieval fantasy realm to one with science fiction elements.
The game's music is being written by series regular Noriyuki Iwadare. Okui Masami sung the theme song "Blood Blade: Beyond the Light and Darkness" (Blood Blade -光と闇の彼方に-).
Re:Incarnation Tensei launched in Japan with 9,300 physical copies sold.
Langrisser III is the sequel to Langrisser II, released in a number of Asian countries but not in the West. It is the first 32-bit installment in the series.
Langrisser III introduced a non-linear relationship system similar to dating sims. Depending on the player's choices and actions, the feelings of the female allies will change towards the player character, who will end up with the female ally he is closest with.
Even though Langrisser III is titled as such, it is a prequel to the first two titles in the series, and deals with the creation of the sword Langrisser. Consequentially, it is also set before the prequel series Elthlead, and lays the foundation for the wars which take place in that strategy series. The game also introduces the genealogies which dominate most of the Langrisser series, with the exception of Langrisser IV, which is set on the Western continent Yeless.
The limited edition of Langrisser III includes an artbook and a holographic cover.
