Lamech (father of Noah)

Lamech (/ˈleɪmɪk/;Hebrew: לֶמֶךְ‎ Lemeḵ) was a patriarch in the genealogies of Adam in the Book of Genesis.

According to Christianity he is part of the genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3:36.

Family

Lamech is the eighth generation descendant of Adam (Genesis 5:25), the son of Methuselah and the father of Noah (Genesis 5:29), in the genealogy of Seth in Genesis 5. In Genesis 5:12-25, Lamech was a son of Methuselah who was a grandson of Jared who was a grandson of Kenan descended from Adam.

Genesis 5:28-31 records that Lamech was 182 years old at the birth of Noah and lived for another 595 years, attaining an age at death of 777 years, five years before the Flood in the Masoretic chronology. With such numbers in this genealogical account, Adam would still have been alive for about the first 56 years of Lamech's life.

According to the ancient Septuagint (Lucianic) translation of Genesis 5:28-31, however, Lamech was 188 at the birth of his son Noah and lived 565 more years, attaining the age of 753.

Lamèch (crater)

Lamèch is a small lunar impact crater that is located to the southwest of the prominent crater Eudoxus, at the eastern edge of the Montes Caucasus range. This is a circular, bowl-shaped formation. The inner walls slope down to a small central floor that is about one-fourth the diameter of the crater. This formation is not notably eroded, and contains no other features of interest.

Lamech (/ˈleɪmɪk/;Hebrew: לֶמֶךְ‎ Lemeḵ) is a person in Cain's genealogy in the 4th chapter of the Book of Genesis. He is the sixth generation descendant of Cain (Genesis 4:18); his father was named Methusael, and he was responsible for the "Song of the Sword". He is also noted as the first polygamist mentioned in the Bible, taking two wives, Adah and Zillah (Tselah).

Interpretation

When fully translated, the text has a strong resemblance simply to a basic mythology concerning the origin of the various forms of civilisation, the shepherds and musicians being products of the day, and pleasure being a product of the night. Blacksmiths, in carrying out their trade, are also associated with the darkness. Thus, in a sense, Lamech could be interpreted as a culture hero. Some of the names also appear to demonstrate punning - Jabal, Jubal, and Tubal rhyme, and appear to be derived from the same root - JBL (YVL in modern Hebrew): to bring forth, (also) to carry. A similar description existed amongst Phoenicians.

Sūrat Nūḥ (Arabic: سورة نوح‎, "Noah") is the 71st sura of the Qur'an with 28 ayat. It is about the Islamic prophet Noah (Nūḥ) and his complaint about his people rejecting all warning God gave them through Noah.

Summary

In Nuh, the 71st surah, the Quran refers to Nuh’s prophethood in snippets. Nuh is a messenger of God. When Nuh realizes the messages are not accepted by the community, he supplicated to God. God planned to flood the community of Nuh at a specificied time. God commanded Nuh to warn the people of the flood. God brings forth the water from the skies to prove Nuh’s message to be accurate. In the Quran, the flood is a symbolization of the mercy of God to the believers. God gives the world a new beginning. The disbelievers disbelieved God's message and messenger Nuh so they were drowned. Because his people are unable to grasp the idea of the existence of one God, the lives of Muhammad and Nuh are parallel to each other for the time of the revelation of this surah. The surah was used to increase the faith of the believers; it shows that Nuh before Muhammad had difficulties in dealing with the disbelievers of his time.
