Lake island

A lake island is any landmass within a lake. It is a type of inland island. Lake islands may form a lake archipelago.

Formation

Lake islands may form in numerous ways. They may occur through a build-up of sedimentation as shoals, and become true islands through changes in the level of the lake. They may have been originally part of the lake's shore, and been separated from it by erosion, or they may have been left as pinnacles when the lake formed through a raising in the level of a river or other waterway (either naturally, or artificially through the damming of a river or lake). They may also have formed through earthquake, meteor, or volcanic activity. In the latter case, crater or caldera islands exist, with new volcanic prominences in lakes formed in the craters of larger volcanoes. Other lake islands include ephemeral beds of floating vegetation, and islands artificially formed by human activity.

Lake Island

Lake Island is an island on the coast of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located between Mathieson Channel and Lady Trutch Passage, and is flanked by Dowager Island (to the northwest), Lady Douglas Island (to the west), and a long finger shaped peninsula of the Canadian mainland to the east. Ironically, Lake Island is not a lake island, as it is in an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, and lies only some 6 kilometres from the open sea.

Lake Island is part of a volcanic area called the Milbanke Sound Group and includes monogenetic cinder cones. Basaltic tuff breccias on Lake Island originated from Helmet Peak.

Lake Island (Antarctica)

Lake Island is a small island between Plog Island and Flutter Island, lying in Prydz Bay just west of Breidnes Peninsula, Vestfold Hills. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936-37. It was remapped by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) (1957–58) and so named because a lake occupies the northern part of the island.
