Lake Taupo is a lake situated in the North Island of New Zealand. It lies in the caldera of the Taupo Volcano. With a surface area of 616 square kilometres (238 sq mi), it is the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand, and the second largest freshwater lake by surface area in geopolitical Oceania after Lake Murray (Papua New Guinea).
Lake Taupo has a perimeter of approximately 193 kilometres and a deepest point of 186 metres. It is drained by the Waikato River (New Zealand's longest river), while its main tributaries are the Waitahanui River, the Tongariro River, and the Tauranga Taupo River. It is a noted trout fishery with stocks of introduced brown and rainbow trout.
Lake Taupo lies in a caldera created by a supervolcanic eruption which occurred approximately 26,500 years ago. According to geological records, the volcano has erupted 28 times in the last 27,000 years. It has ejected mostly rhyolitic lava, although Mount Tauhara formed from dacitic lava.
Taupo (/ˈtoʊpɔː/, commonly pronounced /ˈtaʊpoʊ/) is a town on the shore of Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the seat of the Taupo District Council and lies in the southern Waikato Region.
Taupo has a population of 23,700 (June 2015 estimate). In 1953, Taupo was officially constituted as a borough, but from 1989 it has been administered by the Taupo District Council, the district including both Taupo itself and the surrounding hinterland. Despite this, it is occasionally referred to as a city. It is the 20th largest urban area in New Zealand, and the second-largest in the Waikato Region (behind Hamilton).
The name Taupo, by which the town is commonly known, is the shortened version of its full name, Taupō-nui-a-Tia. Literally translated from Māori language, Taupō-nui-a-Tia means "The great cloak of Tia", where Tia is the name of the discoverer of the lake.
In 2009 a team of Taupo citizens won the TV2 programme Top Town.
Taupo is located at the outlet of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, in the northeast part of the lake where it discharges to the Waikato River. The river flows over the spectacular Huka Falls, a short distance north of the town. Taupo is a centre of volcanic and geothermal activity and hot springs suitable for bathing are located at several places in the vicinity. The volcanic Mount Tauhara lies six kilometres (4 mi) to the east.
Taupō (before 2008 styled as Taupo with no macron) is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate returning one Member of Parliament to the House of Representatives. Taupo first existed between 1963 and 1981, and was recreated for the introduction of MMP in 1996. The current MP for Taupō is Louise Upston of the National Party. She has held this position since 2008.
The Taupo electorate was first created for the 1963 election and it existed until 1981. The former electorate was much smaller than the current one, since it did not contain the western side of Lake Taupō, nor Cambridge, nor the Ruapehu towns. It was a marginal seat and frequently changed between National and Labour.
The current Taupō electorate was created ahead of the introduction to mixed-member proportional (MMP) voting in 1996. It is a merger of the old marginal seat of Tongariro with the western half of the safe National seat of Waikaremoana. The current electorate is centred around Taupō district and its main towns of Taupo, Turangi and Mangakino, with the South Waikato District towns of Tokoroa, Tirau and Putaruru. Prior to the 2008 election, the electorate pulled south to take in the northern and western parts of Ruapehu District.
Dinky the boy from next door
Talked to the rich man standing
in his garden, looking so
miserable
He said you are the rich
man here
so why do you cry
Rich man said to the boy
It' s all bills and more bills
Dinky said to the rich man
I know a place where we
can go
Where we don' t pay
government taxes
Where we don' t pay
telephone bills
All we care about is candy
Let me welcome you to the kingdom
Kingdom of the children
Little boy said
Kingdom of the children
Rich man did not believe what he heard
From the little boy
Till the little boy
Made it clear to him
Chorus:
In my world there' s no trouble
In my world there' s no worries
Let me welcome you to the
Kingdom of the children /
Little ones
Rich man thought about it
Said, I have everything
But still I' m not happy
Maybe if I change
And live my life like a child
I' ll be happy yeah
He said 'cause they
Don' t have no politics
They don' t care about
Being rich
They don' t care about
Being poor
All they care about is
CANDY
