Lake House

Lake House is an Elizabethan country house dating from 1578, in Wilsford cum Lake in Wiltshire, England, about 7 miles north of Salisbury. It is a Grade I listed building. The gardens are Grade II listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest.

History

Lake House was built in 1578 for George Duke, a wealthy clothier, shortly after he acquired the manor of Lake. The house is built of Chilmark stone, the pale limestone from which Salisbury Cathedral was also built, and flint chequerwork: its treatment at Lake House has been described as "an outstanding example of this technique". The house has two storeys, with basement and attic areas; the stone mullion windows have transoms. It has gabled terracotta-tiled roofs and the chimneys are diagonally-set. Its west front faces the road and is symmetrical, forming a five-part pattern of central projecting porch, flanked on either side by recessed windows and then at each end by semi-octagonal bay windows. The projecting bay areas carry up the full height of the two storeys and are topped by crenallations. There are five small windowed gables at roof level. The Duke family shield is above the doorway.

Lake House (Antarctica)

Lake House is a lake in the extreme west end of Pearse Valley, north of Friis Hills in Victoria Land, Antarctica. It was named by the eight Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition (VUWAE), 1963–64, for D.A. House, chemist and member of the VUWAE party that explored lakes in Taylor, Wright, and Victoria Valleys.

Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited is a public limited liability company incorporated in Sri Lanka in 1926. 75% of its shares were Nationalized under the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Special Provisions) Law No. 28 of 1973 and this stake is held by the Public Trustee of Sri Lanka on behalf of the Government. Lake House is Sri Lanka's oldest publication company. Its Daily News English daily was the first Sri Lankan newspaper to be published on-line. At present Dinamina, Daily News, Thinakaran, Sunday Observer,Silumina, Budusarana and Sarasaviya publications are available on-line and continue to enjoy the privilege of being amongst the most widely accessed websites in Sri Lanka. ANCL is in the process of systematically introducing all publications to the ANCL website in the near future thus giving Sri Lankan expatriates as well as foreign communities opportunities of fast access to news in Sri Lanka.
