Lake City is the northeast region of Seattle, centered along Lake City Way NE (SR-522), 7–8 miles (11–13 km) northeast of downtown. A broader definition of the Lake City area includes all the land between 15th Avenue NE and Lake Washington, and between NE 95th and 98th streets to the Seattle city limits at NE 145th Street. Lake City encompasses much of the Thornton Creek watershed, the focus of a long restoration campaign by citizens and Seattle Public Utilities staff to enhance the residential environment of Lake City.

History

What is now Lake City has been inhabited since the end of the last glacial period (c. 8,000 BCE10,000 years ago). The hah-chu-ahbsh (Lake People), now of the Duwamish tribe, Lushootseed (Skagit-Nisqually) Coast Salish, lived in diffuse permanent settlements along the shore of Lake Washington, dispersing in the summer, and in the winter living in large cedar long houses, each home to a couple dozen or more members of extended family groups. The lake people lost their rights in 1854. The Lake City area was clearcut by crude wagon road or by using Lake Washington, from 1850 to around the start of the 20th century, more rapidly with the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway (c. 1886) providing easy access along what is now the Burke-Gilman Trail adjacent to the lake. Wetlands were drained. A Little Germany neighborhood of several immigrant farmers grew up in the 1870s around where Nathan Hale High School now stands.

Lake City, Florida

Lake City is the county seat of Columbia County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 12,046. It is the principal city of the Lake City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is composed of Columbia County, and had a 2010 population of 67,531. The city's sesquicentennial was held in 2009.

History

The site of Lake City was a Seminole village named Alpata Telophka or Hvlpvtv Tvlofv, meaning "Alligator Village". By 1830, a Euro-American town called Alligator was established, adjacent to the Seminole town. The city was incorporated and changed to its current name in 1859. The name was changed because the mayor's wife, who had recently moved to the town, refused to hang her lace curtains in a town named Alligator. Local bodies of water include Lake DeSoto, Lake Isabella, Alligator Lake, Lake Hamburg, Gwen Lake, Lake Harper and Watertown Lake.

The Civil War Battle of Olustee took place east of Lake City, near Olustee in Baker County, in February 1864. It was the only major battle in Florida during the war. Union casualties were 1,861 men killed, wounded or missing; Confederate casualties were 946 killed, wounded or missing. The Confederate dead were buried in Lake City.

  • Seattle (song)

"Seattle" is a song, which was composed by Hugo Montenegro and whose lyrics were written by Jack Keller and Ernie Sheldon, which was used as the theme for the 1968-70 ABC-TV U.S. television show Here Come the Brides, which was situated in 19th-Century Seattle, Washington.

    Performances

Late in the show's first season, singer Perry Como recorded a version of the song, which became a Top 40 hit for him on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts in early 1969. One of the stars of Here Come the Brides, pop singer Bobby Sherman, also recorded a version of the song, but his version was never released as a single.

Two different versions were used as the theme for the television series, for both of which Montenegro conducted an in-studio orchestra: the first was instrumental; and the second was vocal, with its lyrics being sung by a musical team called "The New Establishment."

"Seattle" is sung by the Seattle Sounders FC's supporter groups, during matches, specifically at the kickoff of each half.

    Seattle (album)

Seattle was Perry Como's 17th 12" long-play album released by RCA Records.

Seattle was Perry Como's first attempt at a contemporary 60's sound. The album's opening track, "Happiness Comes, Happiness Goes" features distorted guitars and swirling organs.

    Lake City

    by: Bebo Norman

Well even in the light of day
    We somehow slipped away
Into the city down by the lake.
And just beyond the crowded streets
We found a place to meet
    Where the grass was greener
And how we did sing beneath our God.
    (Chorus)
And the measure of that place
Was the pleasure on your face
As the music starts to rise.
    And the sun did fall
But when the melody was young
Until the singers all were sung
    The Maker of the skies
    Well He just smiled on.
    And the move was fine.
    Beneath the mountain city walls
It was a picture of us all
    And our hearts were laughing
    As the band did play.
Until the music took our feet
To the motion of the street
    This grass was bluer
    And how we did dance
    On the yellow lines.
    (Chorus)
    When the darkness finally fell
    The mountains cast their spell
    And we were together
    With our eyes upheld
To the passion in the sky
    Our God and country light
    It's an endless matter.
    And how we did shine,
How we did shine beneath that light.
    Beneath that light
    Beneath that night.
