Lady of the Lake

Lady of the Lake is the titular name of the ruler of Avalon in the Arthurian legend. She plays a pivotal role in many stories, including giving King Arthur his sword Excalibur, enchanting Merlin, and raising Lancelot after the death of his father. Different writers and copyists give the Arthurian character the name Nimue, Viviane, Vivien, Elaine, Ninianne, Nivian, Nyneve, or Evienne, among other variations.

In medieval literature

The Lancelot-Grail Cycle provides a backstory for the Lady of the Lake, Viviane, in the prose Merlin section, which takes place before the Lancelot Proper, though it was written later. There, Viviane learns her magic from Merlin, who becomes enamored of her. She refuses to give him her love until he has taught her all his secrets, after which she uses her power to trap him either in the trunk of a tree or beneath a stone, depending on the story and author. Though Merlin, through his power of foresight knows beforehand that this will happen, he is unable to counteract Viviane because of the "truth" this ability of foresight holds. He decides to do nothing for his situation other than to continue to teach her his secrets until she takes the opportunity to entrap and entomb him in a tree, a stone or a cave.

Lady of the Lake (steamboat)

Lady of the Lake was a wooden steamboat that operated on Puget Sound from 1897 to 1903. Following a fire in 1903, the vessel was rebuilt as the tug Ruth.

Career

Lady of the Lake was built at Seattle in 1897. The engines for Lady of the Lake came from the burned steamer Quickstep, which had in turn been purchased by Capt. John L. Anderson for $1,600 as a replacement for his Lake Washington steamer Winnifred which had burned at Leschi Park in early 1896. Anderson built Lady of the Lake by himself with his own money. Shortly after he had finished the boat, he was able to sell it for a good profit to Bellingham interests. The new owners took the vessel to run on Puget Sound.

In 1903 the steamboat was running on the short commuter route across Elliott Bay between Seattle and West Seattle, and was operated by the vessel's owners, Captains Charles H. Gaffner and J. Holbrook, Chief Engineer Parks, and Purser Greenwood. engaged in a rate war first with the small passenger-only steamer Garden City then more seriously with the steam ferry City of Seattle. There were two collisions between the vessels during the rate war. The owners of Lady of the Lake reduced their fares to five cents, which prompted the ferry operators to allow 40 rides for one dollar.

Lady of the Lake (brig)

Lady of the Lake was an Aberdeen-built brig that sank off the coast of Newfoundland in May 1833, with the loss of up to 265 passengers and crew.

Sinking

The vessel had departed from Belfast on April 8, 1833, bound for Quebec. At 8:00 a.m. on May 11, 1833, Lady of the Lake was struck by ice on the starboard bow and began to sink, about 250 miles east of Cape St. Francis, Newfoundland. One of the lifeboats capsized shortly after lowering, with the loss of an estimated 80 individuals. Lady of the Lake continued to sink with about 30 passengers clinging to the maintop mast. The survivors spent 75 hours in an open boat before being rescued by the ship Amazon.

Sources differ as to the final death toll, with estimates ranging from 170 to 265.

The Lake (short story)

The Lake is a short story by American author Ray Bradbury. It was first published in the May 1944 edition of Weird Tales, and later collected in Bradbury's collections Dark Carnival, The October Country, and The Stories of Ray Bradbury.

Plot

The story focuses on a young man named Harold and his recollection of a traumatic experience from his childhood where a close friend of his named Tally drowned in a lake where they often played together. Her body was never found. Visiting the lake once more as an adult alongside his newlywed wife, he finds that the lifeguard has recovered the drowned corpse of a child who is soon revealed to be that of his beloved Tally.

WHLK

WHLK (106.5 FM) – branded 106.5 The Lake – is a commercial adult hits radio station licensed to Cleveland, Ohio. Owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., the station serves Greater Cleveland and much of surrounding Northeast Ohio. The WHLK studios are located in the Cleveland suburb of Independence, while the station transmitter resides in nearby Parma. Besides a standard analog transmission, WHLK broadcasts over two HD Radio channels, and is available online via iHeartRadio.

History

The station was originally supposed to be the home of WJMO-FM before a studio/call letter/format swap took place between the owners of WJMO and WSRS (now WERE) in 1958, putting the license in the hands of Tuschman Broadcasting Company. On May 4, 1960, the new station first signed on as WABQ-FM. By May 1961, the station changed its callsign to WXEN. The new callsign stood for XENophon Zapis, a station show producer who later helped to establish WZAK as that station's owner.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, WXEN and WZAK both featured mostly nationality programming, that is, one or two hour programs devoted to music and programming for different nationalities, such as Polish, Slovenian or Hungarian, with program hosts speaking in the native language. It used the slogan "The Station of the Nations." Tuschman Broadcasting Company sold both WXEN and WABQ to Booth Broadcasting of Detroit in 1964. Booth American installed a rock format on March 13, 1977 with the branding "ZIP 106", changing the call letters to WZZP on March 21, 1977.
