Madcap (comics)

Madcap is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared as a foe of Captain America in Captain America #307 (July 1985).

Concept and creation

Madcap first appeared in Captain America #307 (July 1985), and was created by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary.

Most of the villains Gruenwald introduced in Captain America were created to symbolize aspects of contemporary American culture and the world political situation. Gruenwald stated, "Madcap represents purposelessness, the disaffected youth of today who thinks 'What's the reason for doing anything?' The ultimate dropout generation."

Fictional character biography

Madcap (true name unknown) was originally a deeply religious young man. On the way to a picnic with his family and church community, their bus collides with a tanker truck full of Compound X07 (an experimental nerve agent developed by A.I.M.). Everyone aboard the bus, including his parents and sister Katy, are killed, leaving him as the only survivor, his body mixing with the Compound. When being told of the deaths of all his friends and family, his mind shatters, his belief in a rational universe swept away.

Madcap (band)

Madcap is an American pop punk band from Southern California, which loosely formed in 1994. After several line-up changes a solid group was formed in 1999, with original members Lee LeBaigue, Johnny Mastantuono, Alfredo Gonzalez and new member Jake Margolis. In 2002, Ace (J. Johnson) replaced singer/guitarist Alfredo Gonzalez. Madcap currently has three albums, and one split/EP: Stand Your Ground (Side One Dummy Records), Mighty Mighty Bosstones/Madcap split; released on Chunksaah Records (2002); East To West, released on Side One Dummy Records was produced by Ted Hutt (2002); and Under Suspicion (2004) released on their current record label Victory Records, also produced by Ted Hutt. Madcap went on hiatus in fall 2004.

Singer Alfredo Gonzalez has formed a new punk band called The Plexikill. Members in the Plexikill are Alfredo Gonzalez, Steve Vallera, and Rosie Gonce. Lead singer Johnny Mastantuono has a new band called Johnny Madcap & The Distractions.

Madcap (project)

Madcap is a prototype system for using computers to automatically segment and highlight a video stream that was designed by Dan Russell's group at PARC. The digital video of weekly forums was stored on a media server, any events such as clapping were marked and time-stamped. Member notes from attendees with laptops were stored. The audio stream was transcribed. All these were used as annotations and were cross indexed.

The development of this system is mentioned in John Seely Brown's work Growing up Digital and his book The Social Life of Information.

Lady

The word lady is a civil term of respect for a woman, specifically the female equivalent to gentleman or lord, and in many contexts a term for any adult woman. Once confined to usage when specifically addressing women of high social class or status; over the last 300 years, the term may now be used to refer to any respectable adult woman.

Etymology

The word comes from Old English hlǣfdige; the first part of the word is a mutated form of hlāf, "loaf, bread", also seen in the corresponding hlāford, "lord". The second part is usually taken to be from the root dig-, "to knead", seen also in dough; the sense development from bread-kneader, or bread-maker, or bread-shaper, to the ordinary meaning, though not clearly to be traced historically, may be illustrated by that of "lord".

Lady (group)

Lady (Hangul: 레이디) was a Korean pop group, noted as the first transgender group from that country. The band consisted of Sinae, Sahara, Binu and Yuna. According to the official story, they were the best out of hundreds who tried out to be part of this band. Although only three were supposed to be in the group, a fourth was added at the last minute.

Their formation was inspired by the emergence of Harisu, a Korean singer and actress, who is also transgender. Sinae has previously appeared in commercials with a female dance group as well as a music video by Cho PD, and Sahara is a 2003 beauty pageant winner in Thailand and a former jeans model.

Lady released their first, self-titled album in 2005, consisting of eight tracks, many of them being remixes of their first two singles, "Attention" and "Ladies Night". There was much attention given to them by the press, given their unique status as a transgender band in a conservative country. However, they were able to perform on Korean music shows only a handful of times, while their music and videos were not well received. In order to drum up more publicity, they released a photobook featuring nude shots of all the Lady members; this also failed to catapult them into stardom, however.

Lady (D'Angelo song)

"Lady" is a song co-written, co-produced and performed by American neo soul singer D'Angelo, issued as the third single from his debut studio album Brown Sugar. A remixed version of the song (titled the Clean Street Version) was also released, featuring vocals from American hip hop musician AZ. Separate music videos were created for both versions of the song.

"Lady" is D'Angelo's biggest hit single to date in the United States, peaking at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996. It was certified gold by the RIAA on June 4, 1996. The song was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1997, but lost to "Your Secret Love" by Luther Vandross.

The Game's 2013 single "All That (Lady)" uses a clear vocal sample of "Lady".

Music videos

The official music video for the original version of the song was directed by Hype Williams. The video for the remix version was directed by Brett Ratner. In addition to AZ, the remix video features appearances from singers Faith Evans and Joi; as well as Erykah Badu in her first music video appearance.
