Ladder

A ladder is a vertical or inclined set of rungs or steps. There are two types: rigid ladders that can be leaned against a vertical surface such as a wall, and rope ladders that are hung from the top. The vertical members of a rigid ladder are called stringers or rails (US) or stiles (UK). Rigid ladders are usually portable, but some types are permanently fixed to buildings. They are commonly made of metal, wood, or fiberglass, but they have been known to be made of tough plastic.

Variations

Rigid ladders are available in many forms, such as:

  • Assault ladder, used in siege warfare to assist in climbing walls
  • Attic ladder, pulled down from the ceiling to allow access to an attic or loft
  • Bridge ladder, a ladder laid horizontally to act as a passage between two points separated by a drop
  • Cat ladder (US chicken ladder), a lightweight ladder frame used on steep roofs to prevent workers from sliding
  • Christmas tree ladder, a type of boarding ladder for divers which has a single central rail and is open at the sides to allow the diver to climb the ladder while wearing swimfins
  • The Ladder (magazine)

The Ladder was the first nationally distributed lesbian publication in the United States. It was published monthly from 1956 to 1970, and once every other month in 1971 and 1972. It was the primary publication and method of communication for the Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian organization in the US. It was supported by ONE, Inc. and the Mattachine Society, with whom the DOB retained friendly relations. The name of the magazine was derived from the artwork on its first cover, simple line drawings showing figures moving towards a ladder that disappeared into the clouds.

    History

The first lesbian publication in the United States was a newsletter called Vice Versa, subtitled "America's Gayest Magazine". It was created and edited by a secretary named Edith Eyde (using the pseudonym Lisa Ben, an anagram of "lesbian") in Los Angeles, and distributed privately in that area from 1947 to 1948.

    Ladder (Go)

In the game of Go, a Ladder (シチョウ Shichou) is a basic sequence of moves in which an attacker pursues a group in atari in a zig-zag pattern across the board. If there are no intervening stones, the group will hit the edge of the board and be captured.

The sequence is so basic that there is a Go proverb saying "if you don't know ladders, don't play Go."

The ladder tactic is often a failure, if there are stones supporting those being chased close enough to the diagonal path of the ladder. Such a failing ladder is called a broken ladder. Secondary double threat tactics around ladders, involving playing a stone in such a way as to break the ladder and also create some other possibility, are potentially very complex. Such plays are called ladder-breakers.

    Ladder

    Today and everyday
    Today and everyday
    Today and everyday
    Today and everyday
I'm standin' here in your closet
    Unbuttonin' all your clothes
I sleep in your bed tonight
But I never find you home
    You're givin' me crooked answers
    I'm crackin' your little code
    I'm learnin' another language
So full it's about to explode
You give me a ladder now
    I surely believe I'll climb
    It don't even matter now
I'm willing to take my time
    I'm gonna love you anyway
    Today and everyday
    Today and everyday
    I'm gonna love you anyway
    Today and everyday
    Today and everyday
I wanted it to be easy
I know that I'll make you tired
Some tell me you're slow and lazy
Some tell me you're so inspired
    You wanted a long flirtation
    Your plane doesn't ever land
Some things I don't want to look at
I don't want to understand but
You give me a ladder now
    I surely believe I'll climb
    It don't even matter now
I'm willing to take my time
    I'm gonna love you anyway
    Today and everyday
