La Salle Academy

La Salle Academy is a private, all boys high school in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is a part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

Founded in 1848 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, La Salle was first known as Saint Vincent's School when it first opened on Canal Street. It moved to Second Avenue in 1856 and changed its name to La Salle Academy in 1887. In 2010 La Salle relocated to 215 East 6th Street, sharing the building with St. George Ukrainian Catholic School. Various offices are still located in the Second Street building. Throughout its history, La Salle has been home to anywhere from 90 to 950 "Brothers' Boys".

Early years

La Salle Academy was founded in 1848 when John Hughes, then Bishop of New York, invited the Christian Brothers to establish a school in the city. They opened St. Vincent's School in a church basement on Canal Street. In 1856, St. Vincent's School moved to East Second Street and Second Avenue, a plot of land that once belonged to Washington Irving. The brothers renamed the school La Salle Academy in 1887. The New York State Board of Regents granted La Salle a charter in 1896. In 1936, the brothers built a five-story building in order to accommodate increasing enrollment. Over the first half of the 20th century, La Salle's enrollment grew immensely, from 98 in 1906 to 950 in 1948.

La Salle Academy (Iligan)

La Salle Academy is a Lasallian school located in Brgy. Pala-o, Iligan City, Philippines. It is the first of the third generation of La Salle schools founded by the De La Salle Brothers in the country, which include: La Salle Green Hills in Mandaluyong City (1959), Saint Joseph School-La Salle in Bacolod City (1960), and De La Salle Lipa in Lipa City (1962).

History

The De La Salle Brothers were invited to Iligan City by Monsignor Patrick Cronin of the Prelature of Ozamiz to assume the operations of St. Columban's Academy, which used to be known as Woodrow Wilson Junior College. The first group of Brothers was led by Br. Crescentius Richard FSC. The school used to be located along St. Michael's Cathedral in Barangay Poblacion but the Brothers opted to transfer the school to a three-hectare lot in Barangay Pala-o after the student population started growing.

After the school was transferred to Pala-o, the Brothers changed the name of the school to La Salle Academy. Br. Alfred Shields was named Director and supervised the construction of the academy's permanent buildings in 1961. At this point, La Salle was still an exclusive all boys' school.

La Salle 56

La Salle TV is a Public, educational, and government access (PEG) cable television station that offers an Educational-access television channel run by La Salle University and carried within Philadelphia’s city limits on the Comcast Cable system. The station reaches over 300,000 homes and attempts to serve the La Salle University community and its neighbors with educational and entertaining programs. The station also serves as a hands-on teaching facility for students interested in the communication field. In 2009, La Salle 56 officially changed their name to La Salle TV due to a recent agreement with Verizon to carry the Student television station.

La Salle University gained the cable channel in 1991 as part of the franchise agreements between cable providers and the city of Philadelphia. Although originally operated by the Academic Computing and Information Technology Department, the Student television station was transferred to the Communication Department in July 1997, allowing the station to use the department’s technical facility and access more students majoring in communication.

LaSalle (automobile)

LaSalle was a brand of automobiles manufactured and marketed by General Motors' Cadillac division from 1927 through 1940. Alfred P. Sloan developed the concept for LaSalle and certain other General Motors' marques in order to fill pricing gaps he perceived in the General Motors product portfolio. Sloan created LaSalle as a companion marque for Cadillac. LaSalle automobiles were manufactured by Cadillac, but were priced lower than Cadillac-branded automobiles and were marketed as the second-most prestigious marque in the General Motors portfolio.

Like Cadillac, the LaSalle brand name was based on that of a French explorer, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

General Motors companion marque strategy

The LaSalle had its beginnings when General Motors' CEO, Alfred P. Sloan, noticed that his carefully crafted market segmentation program was beginning to develop price gaps in which General Motors had no products to sell. In an era where automotive brands were somewhat restricted to building a specific car per model year, Sloan surmised that the best way to bridge the gaps was to develop "companion" marques that could be sold through the current sales network.
