La Rinconada is a city in the Peruvian Andes located near a gold mine. It is the highest elevation human habitation in the world.
Geography
The city is located in the Ananea District, San Antonio de Putina Province. It lies at a height of 5,100 m (16,700 feet) above sea level. It sits at the foot of La Bella Durmiente, "The Sleeping Beauty" glacier. Miners who live in La Rinconada while working often have homes in Juliaca which has municipal services and is at a lower altitude.
Climate
Located in the Andes, La Rinconada has an alpine climate (ET, according to the Köppen climate classification). The city has wet summers, dry winters and chilly to cold temperatures throughout the year, with snowfalls.
The average annual temperature in La Rinconada is 1.2 °C and the average annual rainfall is 707 mm.
Population
From the year 2001 to 2009, the population grew to 30,000 inhabitants from just a small prospector camp, as the price of gold rose 235% in the same time.

Rinconada
Rinconada (Spanish pronunciation: [riŋkoˈnaða]) is a city and commune in the Los Andes Province of central Chile's Valparaíso Region. It was created on 18 January 1897 by Federico Errázuriz Echaurren.
Since the shrine to house the remains of Saint Teresa of the Andes was built in the field of Auco, , the municipality has become the spiritual capital of Chile due to the large number of pilgrims from all over the country. Behind the sanctuary is the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, where the community of Discalced Carmelite Mothers resides.
Demographics
According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Rinconada spans an area of 122.5 km2 (47 sq mi) and has 6,692 inhabitants (3,429 men and 3,263 women). Of these, 5,727 (85.6%) lived in urban areas and 965 (14.4%) in rural areas. The population grew by 16.1% (927 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.
Administration
As a commune, Rinconada is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Juan Pablo Galdames Burgos (UDI). The council has the following members:

Rinconada is a rural municipality and village in Jujuy Province in Argentina. It is located in the west of the province of Jujuy and is the head of the Rinconada Department.
Due to its altitude of 3851 meters, it is the highest city of Argentina, taking into account those cities possessing municipal organization.
The village is accessed by a 62 km gravel road (Provincial Route 7) that starts 4 km north of Abra Pampa, on National Route 9.T The Laguna de los Pozuelos, found along this route, contains 150 km² of protected area (Monumento Natural Laguna de los Pozuelos).
