La Grange Park, Illinois

La Grange Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village, which is a suburb of Chicago, had a population of 13,579.

Geography

La Grange Park is located at 41°49′47″N 87°52′9″W / 41.82972°N 87.86917°W / 41.82972; -87.86917 (41.829831, -87.869233).

According to the 2010 census, La Grange Park has a total area of 2.23 square miles (5.78 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 13,295 people, 5,432 households, and 3,516 families residing in the village. The population density was 8,925 people per square mile. There were 5,560 housing units at an average density of 2,467.3 per square mile (954.1/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 93.2% White, 3.1% African American, 0.1% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, .9% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.6% of the population.

The top five ancestries reported in La Grange Park as of the 2000 census were Irish (22.6%), German (22.0%), Polish (16.1%), Italian (11.7%) and Czech (10.0%).

La Grange, Missouri

La Grange is a city in Lewis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 931 at the 2010 census. Since the 1960 census, the population has been dwindling. It is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

In 1885, the Supreme Court ruled against the city in Cole v. La Grange. The court found that the city could only use eminent domain powers for public purposes and not to specifically benefit the La Grange Iron and Steel Company.

In 1858 the Southern Baptists opened the LaGrange Male and Female Seminary. It later became LaGrange College, with a two-year junior college program.

In 1928 it moved to Hannibal as Hannibal–LaGrange College (now Hannibal–LaGrange University).

In 2002, the Mark Twain Casino opened in a stationary riverboat.

In 2010, Officer Doug Howell of the LaGrange PD shot and killed a restrained dog in an incident that LaGrange is perhaps best known for today. The city ultimately settled a lawsuit on the matter for $50,000. Officer Howell remains employed.

La Grange (actor)

La Grange (1635– 1 March 1692), whose real name was Charles Varlet, was a French actor and a member of the troupe of Molière.

Early life

Charles Varlet was the son of Hector Varlet and Marie de La Grange. The couple apparently married in Paris in 1634 and moved to Montpellier in 1636, where they had a son, Achille Varlet (born 17 December 1636) and a daughter, Justine-Françoise (born 14 May 1638). After the birth of their daughter they left Montpellier. The birth date of Charles is not well established, but is thought most likely to be near the end of 1639, or possibly early in 1640. The family was in Paris in 1642 (Achille and Justine were baptised at the Église de Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs on 12 February 1642), but not long after the children lost their parents and became orphans.

Career with the Molière company

La Grange joined Molière's company in 1659, soon after they had returned to Paris from touring the provinces. Being young and attractive, he was the jeune premier and generally played Molière's lovers, roles which as Charles Dickens, Jr., has written are "among the least interesting of his personages." Later La Grange played more versatile parts such as the title roles in Racine's Alexandre le Grand (1665) and Molière's Dom Juan (1666), as well as Acaste in Molière's The Misanthrope (1666).

Grange Park (Toronto)

Grange Park is a prominent and well-used public park in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located south of the Art Gallery of Ontario, beside the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU), and north of University Settlement House, at the north end of John Street. The Park lends its name to the Grange Park neighbourhood in the vicinity of the park.

Features

Grange Park features a wading pool, children's playground, and numerous trees and walkways. Historically, it was the backyard of "The Grange" that eventually was expanded and became the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Wading pool

The wading pool was originally open 10am to 5:30pm, but, due to records of bather load, it was determined that there was very little usage in the morning, and more in the evening, so the hours of operation were changed and are now 12pm to 7:30pm. These hours are shortened towards the end of the summer and closed in the winter. Because of the slow drain, the drain is usually opened a couple of hours prior to closing, so the water levels are lower toward the end of the time that the pool is open for.

Grange Park is a neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is bounded on the west by Spadina Avenue, on the north by College Street, on the east by University Avenue and on the south by Queen Street West. It is within the 'Kensington-Chinatown' City of Toronto planning neighbourhood. Its name is derived from the Grange Park public park. The commercial businesses of Chinatown extend to within this neighbourhood.

History

Grange Park was initially an elite neighbourhood, with mansions lining Beverley Street but the area was transformed into a working class, immigrant community by 1900 with rows of workers' cottages. By 1914, the area had become predominantly Jewish as Eastern European Jewish immigrants left The Ward and moved west of University Avenue towards Spadina Avenue. Synagogues and other community institutions were located on McCaul, Beverley and Cecil streets. By the 1960s, the Jewish community had given way to the Chinese community following the demolition of Toronto's original Chinatown to build the new City Hall, which migrated westward along Dundas Street to form the present-day Chinatown centered at Dundas and Spadina.
