Kubinka

Kubinka (Russian: Ку́бинка) is a town in Odintsovsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, located on the Setun River, 63 kilometers (39 mi) west of Moscow. Population: 22,964 (2010 Census); 26,158 (2002 Census); 8,019 (1989 Census).

History

It was founded in the 15th century and may have been named after Prince Ivan Kubensky, a prominent local land owner. It grew in importance in the second half of the 19th century when the Moscow-Smolensk railway passed though the area. The military test range for tanks was opened in 1931 and the military airbase opened soon afterwards. Town status granted to Kubinka in 2004.

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with twenty-three rural localities, incorporated within Odintsovsky District as the Town of Kubinka. As a municipal division, the Town of Kubinka is incorporated within Odintsovsky Municipal District as Kubinka Urban Settlement.

Transportation

The town is linked by the suburban rail to Moscow's Belorussky railway station.

Kubinka (air base)

Kubinka (Russian: Кубинка) is an air base in Moscow Oblast, Russia located 5 km northwest of Kubinka. In close proximity to Moscow, the Kubinka facility showcases the best of the Russian Air Force to the general public.

The 82nd aviation detachment (separate) arrived at the base in 1935, joined in 1938 by the 11th and 24th Aviation Regiments. Personnel of these units field-tested the advanced Yak-1 and LaGG-3 fighters and defended Moscow during the Second World War. After the war, the base became home to the 324th Svirskaya Fighter Aviation Division from November 1945. In November 1950, the whole 324th Fighter Aviation Division was redeployed to Korea, and the base was taken over by the 9th Fighter Aviation Division from February 1951.
