Koryū

Koryū (古流, old style) and kobudō (古武道, ancient martial arts) are Japanese terms that are used to describe Japanese martial arts that predate the Meiji restoration (1868). The term is contrasted with Gendai budo "modern martial arts" (or shinbudo "new martial arts") which refer to schools developed after the Meiji Restoration.

Distinction

In Japanese, kobudō 古武道 and ko-ryū 古流 are normally treated as synonyms (for example, All Japan Kendo Federation,). In English, the International Hoplology Society makes a distinction between kobudō and ko-ryū concerned the origin and the difference between the ranking of priorities concerning combat, morals, discipline and/or aesthetic form.

Description of Koryū

This term literally translates as "old school" (ko—old, ryū—school) or "traditional school". Koryū is also a general term for Japanese schools of martial arts that predate the Meiji Restoration (1868) which sparked major socio-political changes and led to the modernization of Japan.

The system of koryū is considered in following priorities order: 1) combat, 2) discipline 3) morals.

Goryeo

Goryeo, also known as Koryŏ (Hangul: 고려; hanja: 高麗; Korean pronunciation: [koɾjʌ]; 918–1392), was a Korean dynasty established in 918 by King Taejo. This kingdom later gave name to the modern exonym "Korea". It united the Later Three Kingdoms in 936 and ruled most of the Korean Peninsula until it was removed by the founder of the Joseon in 1392. Goryeo expanded Korea's borders to present-day Wonsan in the northeast (936–943), the Yalu River (993) and finally almost the whole of the Korean Peninsula (1374).

Two of this period's most notable products are celadon pottery and the Tripitaka Koreana—the Buddhist canon (Tripiṭaka) carved onto roughly 80,000 woodblocks and stored (and still remaining) at Haeinsa. Subjects and officials of Goryeo also created the world's first metal-based movable type in 1234; the oldest surviving movable metal type book, the Jikji, was printed in 1377.

In 668, Silla conquered Baekje and Goguryeo with an alliance with Tang China, but by the late 9th century it was tottering, its monarchs being unimaginative and pressed by the power of powerful statesmen. Many robbers and outlaws agitated and in 900 Gyeon Hwon revolted from Silla control in the Jeolla region as the state of Later Baekje; the year after, Gung Ye revolted from the northern regions as Taebong. A son of a regional lord, Wang Geon, joined Taebong as a general.

Williams, California

Williams (formerly, Central) is a city in Colusa County, California, United States. The population was 5,123 at the 2010 census, up from 3,670 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 square miles (14 km²), all of it land.

History

The postal service established a post office at Central in 1874. The town and post office were renamed in 1876, in honor of W.H. Williams, who platted the townsite. The city of Williams was incorporated in 1920.

2010

The 2010 United States Census reported that Williams had a population of 5,123. The population density was 941.0 people per square mile (363.3/km²). The racial makeup of Williams was 2,785 (54.4%) White, 59 (1.2%) African American, 55 (1.1%) Native American, 94 (1.8%) Asian, 4 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 1,946 (38.0%) from other races, and 180 (3.5%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3,891 persons (76.0%).

The Census reported that 5,014 people (97.9% of the population) lived in households, 23 (0.4%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 86 (1.7%) were institutionalized.
