Kony (film)

Kony (Bengali: কোনি) is a national award winning Bengali movie released in 1986 directed by Saroj Dey, starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Sriparna Banerjee. This film is a adaptation of a Bengali novel by the same name written by Moti Nandi. The film is about a girl living in Calcutta slums, who with help of her coach triumph over poverty and hardships. Film's lead Sriparna Banerjee was also a professional swimmer herself in the 1970s and at the time of casting a student of Jadavpur University.

In an 2012 interview, veteran actor, Soumitra Chatterjee, called Kony one of the best films of his career. He even recalled using film's catch-phrase "Fight-Koni-fight" in hard times, as a chant to himself to lift his "aging spirits". The phrase had become popular with middle-class Bengalis at the time.

Synopsis

Kony is an inspirational story of a coach and his trainee Kony who fight all odds to achieve their aims. Khidda (Soumitra Chatterjee) is a swimming coach who teaches swimming to underprivileged kids. He picks Kony (character played by Sriparna Banerjee) from a slum of Calcutta and grooms her to be part of the Bengal Swimming team to compete at the National Swimming Championship. However, politics, poverty and social stigma emerges as distinct roadblocks in their path.

Konni (Russian: Ко́нни, 1999–2014), full name Connie Paulgrave (Ко́нни По́лгрейв), also known as Connie, was a female black Labrador Retriever owned by President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Given to Putin as a gift in 2000 by General of the Army Sergey Shoygu, she was often seen at Putin's side, including at staff meetings, and when Putin greeted world leaders upon their visits to Russia.

Family

Konni, full name Connie Paulgrave, was born in 1999 at a cynology centre of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Noginsk, where she was to be trained as a search and rescue dog. Konni's parents are Henrietta Bush (mother) and Alkor Ross Bradford (father). Alkor Ross Bradford had hereditary lines to a Labrador once owned by Leonid Brezhnev, the one-time General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. There are rumours, although they are unconfirmed, that Konni was named after Condoleezza Rice. In December 2000, Konni was presented to Vladimir Putin as a gift from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, by General of the Army Sergey Shoygu.
