Kohat District

Kohat is a district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, Kohat city is the capital of the district. It is inhabited by various Pashtun tribes such as Afridi, Khattak, Bangash and the Orakzai.

Languages

Kohat region has undergone a chequred history and has been the melting pot for various communities as far as the Qandahar and Mazar Shrif in the North and those from the Peshawar region and Bannu region in the south. Historically it was home of local Kohatis who use to speak Kohati. After demographic changes in recent decades due to Afghan Refugees and Tribal peoples arrival, Pashto language speakers are in majority today. Urdu being National language is also spoken and understood.

Tribes

The main tribes of Kohat are Banoori, Mian Khel, Bangash, Kohati Hindkown, Orakzai, Shinwari, Afridi, Niazi, Qureshi and Paracha

Mughal era

From the early sixteenth century the history of Kohat revolves around three major tribes namely Bangash, Banoori,and Afridi . These people appear to have settled in the district, during 14th and 15th centuries. From 16th to 18th centuries, Kohat being part of Mughal Empire was administered by the Chiefs of two afore mentioned tribes. In the beginning of 19th century Kohat came under the control of Sikhs who ultimately withdrew leaving to the administrative control of Khan of Teri in 1836.

Kohat

Kohat (Pashto: کوهاټ‎), (Urdu: کوہاٹ‎), is a city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is the capital of the Kohat District. The town centers on a British-era fort, various bazaars and a military cantonment. A British-built narrow gauge railway line runs through the town.

Geography

Kohat city is located at an altitude of 489 metres (1,604 ft).Kohat Pass lies to the north. It is situated on the left bank of the Toi river at a point where after running nearly due east for 50 miles (80 km), it turns to the south. The total area of the district is 2,545 square kilometres (983 sq mi)

Tanda Wildlife Park

Tanda Wildlife Park is located near Kohat city. The total area of the park is 2800 acres, consisting of Tanda reservoir and its catchments in Kohat. This is the largest wildlife park of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa . Its wonderfully rich and varied landscape supports a range of mammals and birds, both migratory and indigenous, as well as a few reptiles.

The park is bounded by three different villages, Bar, Kaghazi, and Tanda Banda. The park is approachable by Hangu-kaghazi metallic road, shahpur-Bar road which is 18 km from Kohat.

Kohat (Urban-V)

Kohat (Urban-V) is an administrative unit known as “Union Council” of Kohat District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

District Kohat has 2 Tehsils i.e. Kohat and Lachi. Each Tehsil comprises certain numbers of Union council. There are 27 union councils in district Kohat.
