Batman: Knightfall

"Knightfall" is the title given to a major Batman story arc published by DC Comics that dominated Batman-related serial comic books in the spring and summer of 1993. "Knightfall" is also an umbrella title for the trilogy of storylines that ran from 1993 to 1994, consisting of "Knightfall", "Knightquest", and "KnightsEnd". Collectively, they are unofficially known as the KnightSaga.

The story takes place over approximately six months. Bruce Wayne (Batman) suffers burnout and is systematically assaulted and crippled by a "super steroid"-enhanced genius named Bane. Wayne is replaced as Batman by an apprentice named Jean-Paul Valley, who becomes increasingly violent and unstable, tarnishing Batman's reputation. Eventually, Wayne is healed through paranormal means, and reclaims his role as Batman.

"Knightfall" resulted in long-term ramifications for the Batman continuity, as Batman's trust from the police, the public, and fellow superheroes had to be rebuilt, due to Azrael's violence. Additionally, Wayne realizes the peril and burden of attempting to work in solitude, leading to the eventual creation of the modern incarnation of the Batman family. The events of Knightfall also led to the resignation of Wayne's loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Knightfall (comics)

Knightfall (Charise Carnes) is a fictional DC Comics character, an enemy of Batgirl (Barbara Gordon). She first appeared in Batgirl #10 (vol. 4) (August 2012) and was created by Gail Simone and Alitha Martinez.

Publication history

Knightfall was created by Gail Simone and Alitha Martinez. She first appeared as Charise Carnes in Batgirl #10 (2012), but wasn't formally introduced as Knightfall until the following issue.

Origin

Charise Carnes and her younger brother Emil were born to William and Virginia Carnes, a rich and prestigious family in Gotham City thanks to her father's real estate dealings. He'd bought a large landfill on the bayfront of Gotham and enacted the state's biggest land reclamation right on top of it. William Carnes was no saint though, building his riches with muscle, bribes, and countless judges in his pocket. Charise was aware of her father's corrupt practices, but idolized him all the same. She never thought another man could come close to the admiration she felt for her father, until she met Trevor. He was a kind boy who was the first one she met that didn't seem to care about her family's riches. He certainly didn't, as one night he came to her house with knives and made Charise bind her parents and little brother up with duct tape, after which he took three hours to cut them to pieces "for the lulz", all while Charise was forced to watch.

Victimized

by: Nightfall

Grab hold of the godsend pride
Try to swallow his solar life
A giver is so gentle to be
But have to have something to give
An icon so strong
A dark feeling so bloody cold
A day without light
A greeting never told
Give me pleasure, have no faith
Give me more I feel true pain
Give me pleasure I am not insane
Give me more for once be straight
I have faith in my life
Where's your bloody smile
I am the burning aureole in the sky
Where's your moral pride
I can't stand looking at these eyes
I am truly paralysed
All these words, the secrets that you hide
All in all being victimized
Right through, right through I tell you
Lock the target, deep breath, shout it loud, let it out
You've got the victim in control
