Kitchen cabinet

Kitchen cabinets are the built-in furniture installed in many kitchens for storage of food, cooking equipment, and often silverware and dishes for table service. Appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens are often integrated into kitchen cabinetry. There are many options for cabinets available at present.

History

As commonly used today, the term kitchen cabinet denotes a built-in kitchen installation of either a floor or a wall cabinet. Typically, multiple floor cabinets are covered by a single counter and floors and walls are not accessible behind and under the cabinets. Kitchen cabinets per se were invented in the 20th century. A precursor, not built-in, was the Hoosier cabinet of the 1910s, a single piece of furniture incorporating storage and work surfaces, of which over 2 million were sold by 1920.

Kitchen Cabinet

The Kitchen Cabinet was a term used by political opponents of President of the United States Andrew Jackson to describe his ginger group, the collection of unofficial advisers he consulted in parallel to the United States Cabinet (the "parlor cabinet") following his purge of the cabinet at the end of the Eaton affair and his break with Vice President John C. Calhoun in 1831.

Secretary of State Martin Van Buren was a widower, and since he had no wife to become involved in the Eaton controversy he managed to avoid becoming entangled himself. In 1831 he resigned his cabinet post, as did Secretary of War John Eaton, in order to give Jackson a reason to re-order his cabinet and dismiss Calhoun allies. Jackson then dismissed Calhounites Samuel D. Ingham, John Branch, and John M. Berrien. Van Buren, whom Jackson had already indicated he wanted to run for Vice President in 1832, remained in Washington as a member of the Kitchen Cabinet until he was appointed as Minister to Great Britain. Eaton was subsequently appointed Governor of Florida Territory.

Kitchen Cabinet (television show)

Kitchen Cabinet is a TV program in Australia on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's ABC1 channel, hosted by Annabel Crabb.

Format

The format is an informal interview program with Australian politicians over a meal prepared by both Crabb and her guest, normally in their home. Crabb brings a dessert and the guest provides their choice of main meal. It is in the 30-minute format.

On several occasions, there have been two guests, typically with one being a self-confessed non-cook who brings in a helper. Crabb chats with the guest(s) during the preparation, and the meal while they eat.

Crabb's being pescotarian has meant that on some occasions the protein for her has been fish-based. Her food preference has also been a factor in her preparation of the desserts.

The show has received mostly positive reviews.

Crabb has said that her most memorable show was with Senator Nigel Scullion, when he took her collecting crustaceans in the coastal mud flats of the Northern Territory.
