Kinn Church (Norwegian: Kinn kyrkje) is a parish church in Flora Municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located on the small island of Kinn. The church is part of the Kinn parish in the Sunnfjord deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, stone church was built in the second part of the 12th century. It is the oldest and the only one of its kind in the Sunnfjord region, and it is one of the most impressive medieval monuments in Western Norway. It was the main church in the parish of Kinn until 1882, when the new Florø Church was built in the newly founded city of Florø.
Currently, Kinn Church is used only during the summer months. The church itself is built in a Romanesque style with Roman-arched windows and doors. The municipality of Kinn bought the church in 1866, and in 1868-1869, major repair work was carried out. Another restoration was carried out in 1911-1912. The most recent restoration work was completed in the late 1960s.
The "lectorium" constitutes the oldest part of the church. Research has shown that it most likely was built in the mid-13th century, and the wooden reliefs have been carved by artists at the royal court in Bergen at the time of Håkon Håkonson. It is considered to be one of the finest gems from Norwegian medieval art.
Kinn is a former municipality in the Sunnfjord district of Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The parish of Kinn has existed for centuries and in 1838, the large parish was established as a municipality that existed from then until 1964. The municipality was centered at the island of Kinn where the main Kinn Church is located. The municipality encompassed all of the present-day municipality of Flora as well as parts of Askvoll (in the south) and the southwestern part of Bremanger (in the north). Upon its dissolution in 1964, it covered 159 square kilometres (61 sq mi).
The municipality (and the island) were named after the old Kinn farm (Old Norse: Kinn) since Kinn Church is located there. The name is identical with the word for "cheek", referring to the steep slope of a mountain on the island. Historically, the name was spelled Kind.
The parish of Kinn was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 3 January 1861, the village of Florø (population: 846) was established as a city and it was therefore separated from the municipality of Kinn. This left 6,531 residents in Kinn. Then on 1 January 1866, the northern district of Kinn on the islands of Bremangerlandet and Frøya and the mainland area surrounding the Gulen Fjord (population: 1,852) was separated from Kinn to form the separate municipality of Bremanger. After the split, Kinn was left with 4,679 inhabitants.
Kinn is an island in Flora Municipality which is in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The island lies about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) west of the town of Florø. The neighboring island of Reksta (where the village of Rognaldsvåg is located) lies just 350 metres (1,150 ft) to the east of Kinn, the island of Skorpa lies about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) northeast of Kinn, and the island of Askrova lies about 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) to the southeast. The 2.5-square-kilometre (0.97 sq mi) island is dominated by a large mountain, with all its residents living on the east side. The mountain, Kinnaklova, is a very notable landmark to sailors in the region since it has a deep ravine that cuts through the center of the peak.
The island is the home to the historic Kinn Church, dating back to the 12th century. The church was the seat of the large parish of Kinn for centuries. The island was also the centre (and namesake) of the old municipality of Kinn which existed from 1838 until 1964. The island can be reached by ferry from the town of Florø. The Kinnaspelet, a historical play, is performed on the island every summer.
