Khanjar

A khanjar (Arabic: خنجر, Persian: خنجر, Turkish: Hançer) is a traditional dagger originating from Oman. Worn by men for ceremonial occasions, it is a short curved sword shaped like the letter "J" and resembles a hook. It can be made from a variety of different materials, depending on the quality of its craftsmanship. It is a popular souvenir among tourists and is sold in souqs throughout the region. A national symbol of the sultanate, the khanjar is featured on the country's national emblem and on the Omani rial. It is also utilized in logos and commercial imagery by companies based in Oman.

History

Although it is not known when the Omani khanjar was first created, rock carvings epitomizing the dagger were found on gravestones located in the central part of the Ru’us al Jibal region. These are believed to have predated the Wahhabi revival, which occurred in the late 1700s. They were also mentioned in an account by Robert Padbrugge of the Dutch Republic, who journeyed to Muscat in June 1672. Historically, only men from the royal family could wear the khanjar. However, all civilian men were permitted to do so after 1970, the year when Qaboos bin Said al Said – the current Sultan of Oman – overthrew his father Said bin Taimur and began to institute reforms to modernize the country.

I wanna be a creature
Before humanity is on earth
No hate, no wars, no ignorance, no force
Only one with mother earth
No sorrow escorts us from our birth
Be a bridge over the river of love
From justice to happiness
Set up by the hands of freedom
From justice to happiness
Set up by the hands of freedom
Set up by the hands of freedom
Yet wishes could be true
Don't turn away, it could be you
The answer will roar at us
If we listen into ourselves
We twaddle since centuries
About justice and peace
We're living in a material world
Supported through avarice
Mendacity is our life
We conceal love and light
Today we're abusing
Animals and nature
To enrich ourselves
To enrich ourselves
We're sleeping so deep
While the bomb is ticking
We pity ourselves
While the fear is kicking
[2x]
Now it's time for the world
To see a man with open eyes
Now it's time to realize
We tell ourselves the best of lies
Now it's time to see the fact
We all are the unity
Now it's time for us
To deliberate our aim
To deliberate our aim
No hate, no wars, no ignorance
No politics, no pain, no force
No weapons, no oppression, no sorrow
No chemicals, no dust, no leaders
No violence, no dust, no leaders
No leaders
Now it's time for the world
To see a man with open eyes
Now it's time to realize
We tell ourselves the best of lies
Now it's time to see the fact
We all are the unity
Now it's time for us
To deliberate our aim
[2x]
To deliberate our aim
To deliberate our aim
To deliberate our aim
Now it's time
Now! Now! Now!
See that aim
See that aim
See that aim
Now it's time - for the world
To see a man with open eyes
Oh, with open eyes
