Transliteration

Transliteration is the conversion of a text from one script to another.

For instance, a Latin transliteration of the Greek phrase "Ελληνική Δημοκρατία", usually translated as 'Hellenic Republic', is "Ellēnikḗ Dēmokratía".

Transliteration is not concerned with representing the sounds of the original, only the characters, ideally accurately and unambiguously. Thus, in the above example, λλ is transliterated as 'll', but pronounced /l/; Δ is transliterated as 'D', but pronounced 'ð'; and η is transliterated as 'ē', though it is pronounced /i/ (exactly like ι) and is not long.

Conversely, transcription notes the sounds but not necessarily the spelling. So "Ελληνική Δημοκρατία" could be transcribed as "elinikí ðimokratía", which does not specify which of the /i/ sounds are written as η and which as ι.

Definitions

Systematic transliteration is a mapping from one system of writing into another, typically grapheme to grapheme. Most transliteration systems are one-to-one, so a reader who knows the system can reconstruct the original spelling.

Khalid Saeed (educator)

Khalid Saeed (born 1950), professor of Urdu Language, is the director of the Centre of Urdu Language and Literature at Maulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.,. He is also the author of two famous books such as Learn Urdu and Khel Kahawat which he developed in a scientific way, keeping in view Learned Learners.

Biography

Khalid Saeed was born in Gulbarga, Karnataka, India. He did his masters in Urdu and Persian from Karnataka University, Dharwad in 1972. He has also done his MA in Urdu from Osmania University in 1996. He obtained doctorate directory from University of Mysore. He actively takes part and organizes national and international seminars., He has also taken part in designing courses of ghazal appreciation and khushqati for the non-urdu ghazal lovers for which he was praised a lot.

Khalid Saeed was invited at various occasions by Hyderabad Literary Trust for Hyderabad Literary Festivals. As a part of the cultural events of Hyderabad Literary Festival in 2015, Khalid Saeed conducted Urdu Calligraphy Workshop at Maulana Azad National Urdu University.
