Kevin Lewis (footballer, born 1940)

Kevin Lewis (born 19 September 1940 in Ellesmere Port) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger in the Football League for Sheffield United, Liverpool and Huddersfield Town.

He also played for Wigan Athletic in the Cheshire League, scoring three goals in eight games.

Currently he is a pub landlord in the Staffordshire moorlands.

Kevin Lewis was a stylish midfielder whose timing could not have been worse in trying make a name for himself on the Anfield wing. He kept Ian Callaghan out of the side at the beginning, scoring 22 goals in 36 games in his first season. But soon he had to give way to Cally and Peter Thompson, despite averaging one goal every two games in his Reds career.

Born in Ellesmere Port, Kevin returned to the north west to play for Liverpool after 62 league appearances for his first club, Sheffield United. He became one of Bill Shankly's earliest signings in June 1960 after making his name as a winger with the Blades and becoming an England Youth international. Kevin was Liverpool's leading scorer in his debut season (1960-61) with 19 from 32 Second Division matches, three more than Dave Hickson and four more than Roger Hunt. Although he started the next season as the team's right-winger, he was displaced by a young Ian Callaghan. He switched wings a year later as Cally became established in the side and managed an impressive total of 10 goals from 19 First Division matches in what would turn out to be his final season at Anfield. Kevin returned to Yorkshire in August 1963 and played little more than a season with Huddersfield before departing from the Football League scene at the very early age of 24.

Kevin William Lewis (born 25 September 1952) was a former English footballer who played in the Football League for Crewe Alexandra and Stoke City. His nephew of the same name was also a footballer who played for Stoke City.

Career

Lewis was born in Kingston upon Hull and played in the youth teams of Manchester United before joining Stoke City in 1972. He never was really able to force his way into Tony Waddington's side and after 16 appearances in four seasons he left the Victoria Ground. He spent three years out of the game before joining Crewe Alexandra in 1979. He spent three seasons at Crewe making 132 appearances and spent a season at Telford United.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.
