Kevin Burke (musician)

Kevin Burke (born 1950) is an Irish master fiddler considered one of the finest living Irish fiddlers. For nearly four decades he has been at the forefront of Irish traditional music and Celtic music, performing and recording with the seminal groups The Bothy Band, Patrick Street, and the Celtic Fiddle Festival.

In addition to his solo albums, Burke has had successful project collaborations with Christy Moore, Andy Irvine & Paul Brady, Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, Jackie Daly, Ged Foley and Cal Scott.

In 2002, Burke was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honour given in the United States for folk and traditional music.

In 2016, Kevin Burke was named "Gradam Ceoil" (Musician of the Year) in the traditional-music awards presented by the Irish-language TV channel TG4.

Biography

Kevin Burke was born in 1950 in London, England to parents from County Sligo in Ireland. Inheriting a love of Irish music from his parents, he took up the fiddle at the age of eight, studied under Jessie Christopherson, and eventually acquired a virtuosic technique in the Sligo fiddling style. He traveled frequently to Ireland to visit relatives and immersed himself in the local Sligo music. By the age of thirteen, he was playing with Irish musical groups. He joined a céilí band, the Glenside, and played weekends at various Irish dance halls around London. In 1966, the Glenside performed at the céilí band competition at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Boyle in County Roscommon and won the competition.

    Kevin Burke is a District Judge in Hennepin County, Minnesota with over three decades of experience on the bench. He has won numerous accolades from national judicial organizations and is well published in judicial periodicals.

    Career

    He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Minnesota in 1972, and was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1975. He served as an assistant public defender in the Hennepin County Public Defenders Office from 1975 until 1979. He left the Public Defenders office in 1979 to be partner at the law firm of Ranum, Quackenbush & Burke. In 1980 he left Ranum, Quackenbush & Burke for a partnership at Chestnut & Brooks, P.A. where he stayed until 1984.

    Judge Burke was first appointed to the bench on July 25, 1984. He was elected to a six year term in 1986 and reelected in 1992, 1998, 2004 and 2010. He created and served as the Presiding Judge for Hennepin County's Drug Court from January 1, 1997 until June 30, 2000. At the time the Hennepin County Drug Court was one of the largest drug courts in the nation. He was elected for four terms as Chief Judge (July 1, 1992 – June 30, 1996; July 1, 2000 – June 30, 2004) and three terms as Assistant Chief Judge (July 1, 1989 – June 30, 1992; December 1998-June 30, 2000). From 1991–1996 he served as the Chair of the Conference of Chief Judges. He chaired the State Board of Public Defense and was a leader in the effort to improve and expand the state’s public defender system.

    Kevin Burke is the Chairman, President, and CEO of Consolidated Edison. He joined Consolidated Edison in 1973. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2000, President and CEO in 2005, and Chairman in 2006.

    Educational background

    Burke graduated from Manhattan's prestigious Regis High School in 1968. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from The Cooper Union, a master's degree in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a master of business administration from Columbia University, and a juris doctor from Fordham University.
