Kettering Town F.C.

Kettering Town Football Club is an English football club originating in Kettering, Northamptonshire but currently based in the town of Burton Latimer. The club participates in the Southern League Premier Division, the seventh tier of English football. Kettering were the first British team to wear sponsorship upon their shirts in 1976, the first club to have their initials in their floodlights at their Rockingham Road ground, and are also the leading FA Cup goalscorers of all time.

History

Kettering Town were originally formed in 1872, turning professional in 1891. The club graduated through twelve different leagues from 1892 until they became founding members of the Alliance Premier League in 1979. The club maintained its status in the top flight of semi-professional football until the 2000–01 season.

Many honours have found their way to Rockingham Road, winning the Midland Football League title in 1896 and 1900. The Southern League Championship was won on three occasions by the club, in 1928 and 1957 under Tommy Lawton and in 1973 under the guidance of Ron Atkinson. In the 1930s the club won the East Midlands League and in 1948 the Poppies became Birmingham League Champions.

Kettering is a town in Northamptonshire, England. It is situated about 81 miles (130 km) from London. Kettering is mainly situated on the west side of the River Ise, a tributary of the River Nene which meets at Wellingborough. Originally named Cytringan, Kyteringas and Keteiringan in the 10th century, the name Kettering is now taken to mean 'the place (or territory) of Ketter's people (or kinsfolk)'.

At the 2001 census the borough had a population of 81,844 whilst the town proper had a population of 51,063. The town is twinned with Lahnstein, in Germany, and Kettering, Ohio, in the United States. Being part of the Milton Keynes South Midlands (MKSM) study area along with other towns in Northamptonshire, the town is due to get around 6,000 additional homes mainly to the east of the town. The town, like other towns in the area, has a growing commuter population as it is located on the Midland Main Line railway, which has fast InterCity trains directly into London St Pancras International taking around 1 hour. This gives an interchange with Eurostar services to Continental Europe.

The last local elections for Kettering Borough Council were held in May 2011. The Conservatives were the overall winner, securing 26 out of the 36 contested seats and obtaining overall control.Their numbers subsequently reduced by one when a councillor defected to UKIP in 2012.

Kettering is a constituency in Northamptonshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2005 by Philip Hollobone, a Conservative.

Boundaries

This constituency covers the major town of Kettering, smaller towns of Desborough and Rothwell, the small town of Burton Latimer and rural settlements. A semi-rural seat; the preponderance of constituents live in the towns and a minority of the wards form a wide array of rural communities that have civil parish or hamlet status.

In local government and in electoral wards, it comprises the Borough of Kettering.

Boundary changes

The constituency created in 1918 included the generally (in the late 20th century) Labour-majority industrial town of Corby until before the 1983 general election, when Corby gained its own constituency.

The Boundary Commission's Fifth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies proposed an additional seat due to population growth in the county. Parliament approved its recommendations for 2010 which made way for the new constituency of South Northamptonshire therefore the constituency lost some wards in these boundary changes.
