Kenwood House

Kenwood House (also known as the Iveagh Bequest) is a former stately home, in Hampstead, London, on the northern boundary of Hampstead Heath. It is managed by English Heritage, and normally open to the public. The house was closed for major renovations from 2012 until late 2013.

The house is best known for the artwork it houses.

History

The original house dates from the early 17th century when it was known as Caen Wood House. The orangery was added in about 1700. In 1754 it was bought by William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. He commissioned Robert Adam to remodel it from 1764–1779. Adam added the library (one of his most famous interiors) to balance the orangery, and added the Ionic portico at the entrance. In 1793-6 George Saunders added two wings on the north side, and the offices and kitchen buildings and brewery (now the restaurant) to the side.

The 2nd Earl and Countess of Mansfield added a dairy to supply Kenwood House with milk and cheese. After two years of negotiations, the 6th Earl of Mansfield leased the house to the exiled Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia and his wife Countess Sophie of Merenberg in 1910.

Housing at the University of Chicago

Housing at the University of Chicago includes 12 residence halls that are divided into 38 houses. Each house has an average of 70 students. Freshmen must live on-campus, and housing is guaranteed but not required thereafter. The University operates 28 apartment buildings near campus for graduate students.

In 2014, 54% of undergraduates lived in college-owned housing.

History

Gates-Blake and Goodspeed Halls opened in 1892 as the first residence halls for the University of Chicago. The buildings were designed by Henry Ives Cobb and served as dormitories for divinity school and graduate students. The buildings feature oriels along their facades and gables along the roof line that are signs of the Chicago Gothic vocabulary.

The first women's dorm, Foster Hall, opened in 1893. It was converted to offices in 1961-62.

Residence halls

Blackstone Hall

Blackstone Hall, located at 5748 S. Blackstone Avenue, accommodates 79 residents. There is only one college house in Blackstone Hall, called Blackstone House. The main campus quadrangles are approximately a ten-minute walk away. The six-story building contains several lounges, a computer lab, a solarium, a fireplace, and a piano. Students reside in "half-double apartments", in which each pair of single rooms contains a shared kitchenette and bathroom. The average room is sized 12 by 12.5 feet.
