Ken (doll)

Ken (Ken Carson) is a Mattel toy doll introduced by Mattel in 1961 as the fictional boyfriend of toy doll Barbie, introduced in 1959. Similar to his female counterpart, Ken had a fantastically fashionable line of clothing and accessories. In the Barbie mythos, Ken and Barbie met on the set of a TV commercial in 1961. Mattel has never specified the precise nature of their relationship. Since his debut, Ken has held at least forty occupations.

Overview

From 1961 to the debut of Superstar Ken in 1977, Ken had straight, non bendable arms and a head that could only turn left and right. Ken's hair was felt in his first year (known to collectors as the "flocked" hair Ken), but this was replaced with a plastic, molded hairstyle when the felt hair was found to fall off when wet. Superstar Ken featured a dimpled smile, a head that could swivel, bent arms, a more muscular physique, jewelry, and underwear permanently molded to his body. The woman who made the Ken doll made it to resemble her husband.

Ken (unit)

The ken (間) is a traditional Japanese unit of length, equal to six Japanese feet (shaku). The exact value has varied over time and location but has generally been a little shorter than 2 meters (6 ft 7 in). It is now standardized as 1 ⁹/₁₁meter.

Although mostly supplanted by the metric system, this unit is a common measurement in Japanese architecture, where it is used as a proportion for the intervals between the pillars of traditional-style buildings. In this context, it is commonly translated as "bay". The length also appears in other contexts, such as the standard length of the bō staff in Japanese martial arts and the standard dimensions of the tatami mats. As these are used to cover the floors of most Japanese houses, floor surfaces are still commonly measured not in square meters but in "tatami" which are equivalent to half of a square ken.

Among English loanwords of Japanese origin, both ken and ma are derived from readings of the same character 間.

This kanji graphically combines 門 "door" and 日 "sun". The earlier variant character 閒 was written with 月 "moon" rather than "sun", depicting "A 門 door through the crevice of which the 月 moonshine peeps in".

Ken (singer)

Lee Jae-hwan (Hangul: 이재환, born April 6, 1992), better known by his stage name Ken (Hangul: 켄), is a South Korean singer and actor, signed under Jellyfish Entertainment. He is one of the main vocalists the South Korean boy group VIXX and has been widely praised for his unique, soulful, and husky vocal tone. Ken began his acting career in 2013 in MBC Every 1's comedy drama Boarding House No. 24 as Lee Jaehwan.

Early Life

Born April 6, 1992 in Jayang-dong, Seoul, South Korea, Ken's family consists of his parents, himself and two older brothers. He studied at Baekseok Arts University majoring in Practical Music. At a young age, he entered and won many singing competitions at local festivals. He later performed and won more singing competitions in middle school as part of a team with his friends. He has won multiple song-writing awards prior to debuting with VIXX.

Career

2012-2013: Debut with VIXX, acting debut and OSTs

Despite an absence of any of dance experience, Ken was able to pass his audition to Jellyfish Entertainment because of his singing where he trained for five months before debuting with VIXX. During this time Ken was one of ten trainees who were contestants in Mnet's survival reality show MyDOL and was chosen to be apart of the final line-up and the 6-member boy group finally debuted with "Super Hero" on May 24, 2012 on M! Countdown.

Doll (Scandal song)

"Doll" is a Japanese-language song by girl pop rock band Scandal. The song begins "Koisuru otome wa utsukushii to iu shoumei dekinai genjitsu / Akogare idaiteru bakari atashi kirei ni kazarareta doll".

It was the major debut single (fourth overall) released by the band, released in two versions: a limited CD+DVD edition and a regular CD-only edition. The title track was used as the October and November 2008 opening theme for TBS's "Rank Oukoku", as well as the October 2008 ending theme for Tokyo MX's "Break Poing". The single reached #26 on the Oricon weekly chart and charted for five weeks, selling 12,572 copies. The DVD includes the karaoke PV for "Doll" with cheers from Scandal.

Doll (locomotive)

Doll is a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge 0-6-0 T steam locomotive based at the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway in Bedfordshire.

History

Industry

Doll was built by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. in 1919 (works number 1641), and was one of three identical engines built for the Sydenham ironstone quarries, near Banbury in Oxfordshire. The quarries were closed in 1925 and the engines were sent to Bilston steelworks, near Wolverhampton. Doll worked there until she was withdrawn from service in 1959.

Preservation

Doll was then preserved near Kenilworth, Warwickshire, and then at Bressingham Steam and Gardens museum, Doll arrived at Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway in 1969.

Doll was temporarily withdrawn from service at the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway in 19??,. at which point she received a new all welded boiler from Bennett Boiler and a full bottom end overhaul at Alan Keef Ltd. The valve gear was fitted with new eccentrics and repined and bushed to remove the lost motion which had developed. It was seen that at some point in the locomotive's past the wear had been compensated for by sawing part of the lap from the slide valves and filling in notches in the reversing quadrant near mid-gear. After repair the engine returned to LBNGR and was in regular use from 2004 before the boiler certificate expired. It is now undergoing another overhaul.

Doll (manga)

Doll (Japanese: ドｰル, Hepburn: Dōru) is a science fiction josei (targeted towards women) manga by Mitsukazu Mihara. Appearing as a serial in the Japanese manga magazine Feel Young from 1998 to 2002, the thirty-three chapters of Doll were collected into six bound volumes by Shodensha and published from August 2000 to August 2002. Taking place in the future, the plot focuses on relationships between people and the eponymous androids; the series has an overarching plot that follows an illegal reprogrammer of Dolls and his revenge against the corporation which creates them. One of the characters, the corporation that manufactors the Dolls, and the concept of the Dolls appeared earlier in Mihara's short manga "The Sunflower Quality Of An Integrated Circuit" (集積回路のヒマワリ) (1995), later collected in IC in a Sunflower (1997).

In 2003, Tokyopop licensed the series for an English-language translations in North America and the United Kingdom, publishing the series from August 2004 to October 2005. The series has received several positive reviews from English-language critics, and the first volume placed in ICv2's list of the top 100 best-selling graphic novels for July 2004. In 2011, Tokyopop's North American branch stopped publication and returned its manga licenses.
