During the early 1980s the call letters were KZAN with a country format. The station then became known as KKGB, beginning 1988. In 1989, the station changed its call sign to KKWY, a Top 40 station. In late 1989, the license was purchased by local Capital Broadcasting, becoming KBZN ("The Breeze") with a Smooth Jazz format. In 2009, KBZN made the format switch to Hot AC and the "Now 97.9" moniker.
