Kit Coleman

"Kit Coleman" (1856–1915) was the nom de plume of the Irish-Canadian newspaper columnist Kathleen Blake Coleman. Coleman was the world's first accredited female war correspondent, covering the Spanish–American War for the Toronto Mail in 1898. Coleman also served as the first president of the Canadian Women's Press Club, an organization of women journalists.

Early life

Kit Coleman was born Catherine Ferguson to Patrick and Mary Ferguson (née Burke) at Castleblakeney in May 1856 near Galway, her birth is often listed incorrectly as 1864 presuming her maiden name is Blake. Her father was a middle-class farmer. Catherine was educated at Loretto Abbey in Rathfarnham and a finishing school in Belgium. As an adult, she recalled her parents influencing her love of creative activities; her father had given her his love of books, and her mother, who was blind, taught her an appreciation of music and to also how to play several instruments. The strongest influence on her intellectual life came from her uncle Thomas Nicholas Burke, a Dominican priest and a renowned liberal and orator, who taught her religious and social tolerance, an attitude that was reflected in her journalism as an adult.

Kathleen is a given name, used in English and Irish-language communities. Sometimes spelled Cathleen, it is an Anglicized form of Caitlín, the Irish form of Cateline, which was the Old French form of Catherine. It ultimately derives from the Greek name Aikaterine, the meaning of which is highly debated (see Katherine).

Kathleen is a census-designated place (CDP) in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,280 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

A post office called Kathleen has been in operation since 1886. The community was named for Catherine Price, an early settler.

Kathleen is located at 28°7′17″N 82°1′35″W / 28.12139°N 82.02639°W / 28.12139; -82.02639 (28.121494, -82.026303).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,280 people, 1,162 households, and 900 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 986.4 people per square mile (380.3/km²). There were 1,250 housing units at an average density of 375.9/sq mi (144.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.87% White, 1.71% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 2.56% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.56% of the population.

Blake is a surname or a given name which originated from Old English. Its derivation is uncertain; it could come from "blac", a nickname for someone who had dark hair or skin, or from "blaac", a nickname for someone with pale hair or skin. Another theory is that it is a corruption of "Ap Lake", meaning "Son of Lake".

Blake was the name of one of the 14 Tribes of Galway in Ireland. These Blakes were descendants of Richard Caddell, alias Blake, who was involved in the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169. As such a long present foreign name it became known as de Bláca in Irish.

The origins of the name Blake are also considered to be Old Norse, first appearing in Yorkshire, England, possibly derived from the word Blaker, referring to a village and a former municipality of Akershus county, Norway (east of Oslo).

Blake are a British vocal group. Blake comprises three men whose friendship and musical careers date back to their school days. After reuniting via Facebook as adults they had recorded their first album in six months. It went to No. 1 in the UK Classical Album Chart, selling over 100,000 copies in three weeks, earning the group a Gold Disc. The album received the Classical Brit Award for Album of the Year in 2008.

Their second album, And So It Goes, peaked at No. 12 in the UK pop charts and No.1 in several classical charts around the world.
