Banu Abs

The Banu Abs (Arabic: بنو عبس‎, lit. "sons of ʿAbs") are an ancient Bedouin tribe from central Arabia. They form a branch of the Ghatafan tribes. They still inhabit the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa. Of the earliest stories concerning this tribe was the famous classical love and war story of Antar and Abla.

Genealogy

The Banu Abs are of the Northern Arabized Arabs, meaning they descend from Adnan. The Banu Abs descend from Abs ibn Bughaydh ibn Raith ibn Ghatafan ibn Sa'd ibn Qais Ailan ibn Mudar ibn Nizar ibn Ma'ad ibn Adnan. They are related to numerous other Arabian tribes, being distant cousins of the Quraysh, Banu Tamim, and Banu Kinanah. The Banu Thibyaan and Mutayr are also descended from Ghatafan. The large and prestigious Banu Rasheed is descended from the Banu Abs; the great-grandfather of the Banu Rasheed is Rasheed al Zaul of the Banu Abs tribe.

History

Absolute value

In mathematics, the absolute value or modulus |x| of a real number x is the non-negative value of x without regard to its sign. Namely, |x| = x for a positive x, |x| = −x for a negative x (in which case −x is positive), and |0| = 0. For example, the absolute value of 3 is 3, and the absolute value of −3 is also 3. The absolute value of a number may be thought of as its distance from zero.

Generalisations of the absolute value for real numbers occur in a wide variety of mathematical settings. For example, an absolute value is also defined for the complex numbers, the quaternions, ordered rings, fields and vector spaces. The absolute value is closely related to the notions of magnitude, distance, and norm in various mathematical and physical contexts.

Terminology and notation

In 1806, Jean-Robert Argand introduced the term module, meaning unit of measure in French, specifically for the complex absolute value, and it was borrowed into English in 1866 as the Latin equivalent modulus. The term absolute value has been used in this sense from at least 1806 in French and 1857 in English. The notation |x|, with a vertical bar on each side, was introduced by Karl Weierstrass in 1841. Other names for absolute value include numerical value and magnitude.

407th Air Expeditionary Group

The 407th Air Expeditionary Group (407 AEG) is a provisional United States Air Force unit assigned to the United States Air Forces Central 321st Air Expeditionary Wing. It is stationed at Ali Air Base, Iraq. The unit was inactivated with the closure of Ali AB on 16 December 2011.

The 407 AEG provides air operations support for coalition air dominance, battlespace control, and security to advance the stabilization of southern Iraq. It provides coalition tactical airlift support with aerial port operations. The 407 AEG was the first Air Force unit to stand up combat operations within Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The group traces its history back to the World War II 407th Bombardment Group (Dive) which was established 23 March 1943, at Drew Field, Florida. The air echelon was attached to Eleventh Air Force in Amchitka, Alaska, from 19 July to 15 August 1943, where it performed combat operations against the Japanese in the Aleutian Islands.

Overview

Approximately 500 active-duty Air Force, Guard and Reserve members are assigned to the 407 AEG during any given Air and Space Expeditionary Force rotation. It consists of the following squadrons:

64th Air Expeditionary Group

The 64th Air Expeditionary Group is a United States Air Force unit subordinate to the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, stationed at Eskan Village, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The group was first activated prior to World War II as the 64th Transport Group During World War II the group (military aviation unit) engaged in combat operations, primarily with Twelfth Air Force during the war, earning a Distinguished Unit Citation.

It was reported that in May 2014 the 64th Group was inactivated.

Overview

The group is made up of about 300 security forces, support airmen, and civilians in two squadrons: the 64th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron and the 64th Expeditionary Support Squadron. Their mission is to stand guard, providing integrated defense, emergency response, and combat support for the base, which houses military and host-nation tenant agencies. Most days the Airmen are fighting the Global War on Terrorism in extreme temperatures of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

732d Air Expeditionary Group

The 732d Air Expeditionary Group (732 AEG) provided oversight and advocacy for roughly 1,100 Air Force personnel spread across four squadrons who were tactically assigned to U.S. Army and Marine units throughout Iraq. These Airmen include security forces, civil engineers, lawyers, truck drivers, interrogators, military working dog teams, intelligence specialists, and airfield managers. These Airmen were under tactical, or day to day, control of Army and Marine units, while administratively and operationally controlled by the 732d AEG.
