Kart racing game

Kart racing game, also known as cart racing game or go-kart racing game, is a subgenre of racing video games. Kart racing games are known to have simplified driving mechanics while adding obstacles, unusual track designs and various action elements. Kart racers are also known to cast characters known from various platform games or cartoon television series as the drivers of "wacky" vehicles.

Kart racing games are a more arcade-like experience than other racing games and usually offer modes in which player characters can shoot projectiles at one another or collect power-ups. Typically, in such games, vehicles move more alike go-karts, lacking anything along the lines of a gear stick and clutch pedal.

History

Crashing Race (1976) was the first game to include car combat and Power Drift featured go-kart racing in 1988, but Super Mario Kart (1992) is cited to have started the kart racing genre, being the first kart racing game to implement combat elements within races. The game was also slower than other racing games of the time due to hardware limitations, prompting the developers to use a go-karts theme for the game. Since then, over 50 kart racing games have been released, featuring characters ranging from Nicktoons to South Park.

Kart Racer

Kart Racer is a 2003 Canadian feature film starring Will Rothhaar, David Gallagher and Randy Quaid. In the United States, it premiered on television on ABC Family in 2005.

The film centers on a boy named Watts "Lightbulb" Davies (Will Rothhaar) who likes to race go-karts. Unable to come up with enough funds to purchase his own kart, Watts convinces his father, Vic Davies (Randy Quaid) (a former kart racer himself), to help him build a cart and teach him how to drive. As he follows his dream, he then has to race against his enemy and idol, Baggims.

Crazyracing Kartrider

Crazyracing Kartrider (Korean: 크레이지레이싱 카트라이더) is an online multiplayer racing game servicing at NEXON. It is part of the Crazy Arcade franchise. It earns revenues by selling virtual items in the in-game shop, including different types of vehicle and spraypaint. Kart Rider not only features fictitious fantasy vehicles but also branded game models based on real-life cars, developed from collaboration with companies such as BMW Korea. About 25% of South Koreans have played the game at least once.

Gameplay

Game modes included races (with and without power-ups) and capture the flag.

Development

A closed beta for an English version of Crazy Racing KartRider began in America on May 1, 2007 and ended on May 31, 2007. The open beta began on October 2, 2007 and ended on March 19, 2008. The English version of Kart Rider for PC is now closed. The website, which had displayed a notice thanking players for participating in the Open Beta was removed and the site's URL now redirects to the Nexon America homepage. This lead some to believe that it will not be returning. On March 11, 2011, Nexon America released Kartrider for the Apple App Store under the name Kartrider Rush. The Chinese version of the game is known as PopKart. Now, Kartrider is on Facebook and is called "Kartrider Dash". However, as of April 15, 2014 the game has been shut down thus ending the lifespan of the franchise in North America for good.
