The Karate Kid, Part II

The Karate Kid, Part II is a 1986 American martial arts drama film and the first sequel to 1984's The Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita reprise their respective roles as young karate student Daniel LaRusso and his mentor Kesuke Miyagi. Like the original film, the sequel was a success, earning even more at the box office than its predecessor, although it received mixed reviews from critics.

Plot

Furious over the loss at the All-Valley Karate Tournament, John Kreese attacks Johnny in the parking lot. Miyagi confronts Kreese and passively immobilizes him. Miyagi threatens to strike a deadly blow but instead comically tweaks Kreese's nose and walks away.

Six months later, Miyagi receives a letter notifying him that his father is dying. He plans to return to his home village in Okinawa, and Daniel accompanies him. Miyagi tells Daniel about why he left Okinawa many years ago. He fell in love with a woman named Yukie, who was arranged to marry his best friend Sato, son of the richest man in the village and fellow karate student of his father. Upon announcing his intentions to marry Yukie, Sato challenged him to a fight to the death. Rather than fight, however, Miyagi left the country.

The Karate Kid is a 1984 American martial arts drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and written by Robert Mark Kamen, starring Ralph Macchio, who was 22 years old during principal photography, Noriyuki "Pat" Morita and Elisabeth Shue. It is an underdog story in the mold of a previous success, Avildsen's 1976 film Rocky. It was a commercial success upon release, and garnered critical acclaim, earning Morita an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film became the first in a series, spawning three sequels and a remake in 2010.

Plot

Daniel LaRusso and his mother Lucille move from Newark, New Jersey to Reseda, California. Their apartment building's handyman is an eccentric but kind and humble Okinawan immigrant named Kesuke Miyagi. He later trains Daniel to become a martial artist.

Daniel befriends Ali Mills, a high school cheerleader from Encino, which draws the attentions of her ex-boyfriend, Johnny Lawrence, a skilled practitioner of karate and member of Cobra Kai, a local dojo. Daniel keeps silent despite Johnny and his Cobra Kai gang constantly bothering and harassing him. He fights back in self-defense until Mr. Miyagi intervenes and single-handedly fends off the five attackers with ease. Amazed, Daniel asks Mr. Miyagi to teach him to fight. Miyagi refuses, but agrees to bring Daniel to the Cobra Kai dojo to resolve the conflict. They meet with the sensei, John Kreese, an ex-Special Forces Vietnam veteran, who callously dismisses the peace offering. Miyagi then proposes that Daniel enter the Under-18 All-Valley Karate Tournament, where he can compete with Johnny and the other Cobra Kai students on equal terms, and requests that the bullying cease while Daniel trains. Kreese agrees to the terms, but warns that if Daniel does not show up for the tournament, the harassment will resume and Miyagi himself will also become a target.

The Karate Kid is an animated series which debuted on NBC's Saturday morning lineup. It starred Joey Dedio, Robert Ito, and Janice Kawaye. It is based on the Karate Kid series of films. Hoping to build from the franchise's popularity, DIC Entertainment, Saban Entertainment, and Columbia Pictures Television premiered an animated Karate Kid on NBC's 1989 Saturday morning schedule.

The show was originally planned for daily Syndication for Fall 1988 with 65 episodes, before eventually settling on a 13 episode order for NBC Saturday Mornings in 1989.

Overview

The show retains apprentice Daniel LaRusso (voiced by Joey Dedio) and his mentor Keisuke Miyagi (voiced by Robert Ito) but abandoned the karate tournament motif for an adventure/quest setting. A miniature shrine with healing powers had been taken from its resting place on Okinawa, and it was up to Miyagi and Daniel to recover it. Together with Okinawan girl Taki (voiced by Janice Kawaye), the karatekas searched the globe and, naturally, encountered several opportunities to chop and kick their way out of trouble. Taki only appeared in the cartoon series in 1989 compare to Kumiko (pronounced KOO-MEE-KOE) from the 1986 live-action sequel The Karate Kid, Part II.
