Mystic Comics

Mystic Comics is the name of three comic book series published by the company that would eventually become Marvel Comics. The first two series were superhero anthologies published by Marvel's 1930-1940s predecessor, Timely Comics, during what fans and historians call the Golden Age of comic books. The third, simply titled Mystic, was a horror fiction-suspense anthology from Marvel's 1950s forerunner, Atlas Comics.

Mystic Comics (Timely)

Volume 1

The first two series titled Mystic came during the 1940s Golden Age of Comic Books from publisher Martin Goodman, whose Timely Comics by the early 1960s would evolve into Marvel Comics. The first four issues were nominally edited by Goodman, but the contents came almost entirely from either the Funnies, Inc. or Harry "A" Chesler studios. Editor Joe Simon relaunched the series after a seven-month gap, with future Marvel chief Stan Lee taking over with issue #8 or #9 after Simon was dismissed for moonlighting at rival DC. In total, it ran 10 issues (March 1940 - Aug. 1942).

Mystic Generating Station

The Mystic Generating Station is a power station in the state of Massachusetts which has the highest nameplate capacity of any station in the state. It is capable of burning both natural gas and petroleum, but mostly burns natural gas.

The plant currently consists of eight separate generating units; Mystic 8 and 9 are six natural gas units which can produce 690.9 MW, Mystic 7 is a natural gas or petroleum unit which produces 577.6 MW, and Mystic Jet is small petroleum fueled unit which produces 8.6 MW in periods of high demand.

History

Mystic Generating Station was originally owned and operated by Boston Edison after its construction in the early 20th century. It originally operated three natural gas units (Mystic 1-3) which have since been decommissioned. In the 1950s, the station was expanded to include three additional units (Mystic 4-6) which had a combined output of 468 MW until their retirement in 2003. Mystic 7 was constructed in 1975 and remains the oldest operating unit at the station. Mystic 8 and 9 were constructed in 1999 and make up the majority of the station's electrical production.

Monk (Dungeons & Dragons)

The monk (also mystic) is a playable character class in most editions of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. A D&D monk is a fantasy martial artist, specializing in unarmed combat.

Publication history

Dungeons & Dragons

The original monk character class was created by Brian Blume, inspired by the fictional martial arts of the Destroyer series of novels. The monk was introduced in 1975's Blackmoor supplement.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition

The monk was a main character class in the first edition Players Handbook. The monk was presented as one of the five core classes in the original Players Handbook.

In 1981, Philip Meyers argued that "the monk is the weakest of the character classes" in an article published in Dragon Magazine #53 (later reprinted in Best of Dragon, Volume III). Meyers offered an extensive unofficial revision to the class, expanding and strengthening many of its game abilities (for example, increasing the monk's hit dice by 50%, raising the maximum level from 17 to 21, and adding class abilities as a "form of psionic power").

Battle Angel Alita

Battle Angel Alita, known in Japan as Gunnm (銃夢, Ganmu, literally "gun dream"), is a manga series created by Yukito Kishiro in 1990 and originally published in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine. Two of the nine-volume comics were adapted into two anime original video animation episodes titled Battle Angel for North American release by ADV Films and the UK and Australian release by Manga Entertainment. Manga Entertainment also dubbed Battle Angel Alita into English.

The series is set in the post-apocalyptic future and focuses on Alita, a cyborg who has lost all memories and is found in a garbage heap by a cybernetics doctor who rebuilds and takes care of her. She discovers that there is one thing she remembers, the legendary cyborg martial art Panzer Kunst, which leads to her becoming a Hunter Warrior or bounty hunter. The story traces Alita's attempts to rediscover her past and the characters whose lives she impacts on her journey. The manga series is continued in Battle Angel Alita: Last Order and Gunnm: Mars Chronicle.
