Kagal is a town lying in Kolhapur district of the Indian state of Maharashtra.
During the rule of the Marathas and British, the town was the seat of a noble Ghatge Maratha family who were among the most important princely state of Kolhapur. Historically it is the birthplace of Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj. The Sahitya Academy Award winner Anand Yadav born in this city. Gopal Krishna Gokhale did his primary education at Kagal.
Kagal is a taluk in Kolhapur district. It is located at boundary of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Chatrapati Shahu Sahakari Sakar Karkhana is located here. The Dudhganga river passes through Kagal. Kagal is located at 16°35′N 74°19′E / 16.58°N 74.32°E / 16.58; 74.32. It has an average elevation of 553 metres (1814 feet).
As of 2001 India census, Kagal had a population of 23,775. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kagal has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Kagal, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
In the history of Finland, the Kagal was a resistance movement, founded under the period of Russian oppression, in resistance to the oppressive government of Governor-General Nikolai Bobrikov. The name (Finnish Kagaali, Swedish Kagal) comes via Russian (hence the -g- for an original -h-) from the Hebrew word qahal.
The central character of the Kagal is thought to have been Leo Mechelin, an independent liberal, but notable lead characters also included Carl Mannerheim (older brother of Marshal of Finland Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim), Adolf von Bonsdorff, Ernst Estlander, J. N. Reuter, Adolf Törngren and Wilhelm Zilliacus from the Swedish People's Party, and the Young Finns Eero Erkko, Th. Homén, Heikki Renvall and P. E. Svinhufvud.
The Kagal was founded in the Turholma mansion in Laajasalo. The lord of the mansion, General Jacob Julius af Lindfors, had inherited his fortune from his father-in-law Henrik Borgström (1799-1883), who had risen from nothing to owning a house of commerce, and had been present in founding the Liberal Party and acted as a notable patron of the arts.

Kagal (constituency number 273) is one of the ten Vidhan Sabha constituencies located in the Kolhapur district. This constituency covers the entire Kagal tehsil and parts of the Ajra and Gaghinglaj tehsils of this district.
Kagal is part of the Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency along with five other Vidhan Sabha segments in this district, namely Chandgad, Radhanagari, Kolhapur South, Karvir and Kolhapur North.
