K-PAX

K-PAX is the name of the first novel in the K-PAX series by Gene Brewer.

The series deals with the experiences on Earth of a man named Prot (rhymes with "wrote"). It is written in the first person from the point of view of Prot's psychiatrist.

K-PAX was adapted into a theatrical film by the same name, released in 2001.

Synopsis

In 1990, a white male is picked up by the New York Police after being found bending over the victim of a mugging at Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan. After responding to the police questions with somewhat strange answers, he is transferred to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation. Although not physically ill, he is found to harbour the strange delusion that he is from a planet called K-PAX in the constellation of Lyra. The patient, who calls himself "prot" (intentionally lower-case to reflect the insignificance of an individual life form in the universe), is eventually transferred to the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute (MPI), where he becomes the patient of Dr. Gene Brewer.

K-PAX (film)

K-PAX is a 2001 American science fiction-mystery film directed by Iain Softley and starring Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Mary McCormack and Alfre Woodard. The screenplay, written by Gene Brewer and Charles Leavitt, is based on the novel K-PAX by Brewer about a psychiatric patient who claims to be an alien from the planet K-PAX. During his treatment, the patient demonstrates an outlook on life that ultimately proves inspirational for his fellow patients and especially for his psychiatrist.

Plot

After claiming he is an extraterrestrial from the planet 'K-PAX', 1,000 light years away in the Lyra constellation, prot (uncapitalized and pronounced with a long O) is committed to the Psychiatric Institute of Manhattan. There, psychiatrist Dr. Mark Powell attempts to cure him of his apparent delusions. However, prot is unwavering in his ability to provide cogent answers to questions about himself, K-PAX and its civilizations. Dr. Powell introduces him to a group of astrophysicists, to whom prot displays a level of knowledge that puzzles them.

PAX217

PAX217 was a Christian Alternative rock band from Orange County, California. The band's music was well known in the underground Christian scene at the time for its unique sound and optimistic lyrics. The name comes from "Pax" which is Latin for "peace" and the Bible verse Ephesians 2:17. The band's style consists of a mix of punk rock and rap with some reggae influences. PAX217's lineup consisted of David Tosti on vocals, Jesse Craig on guitar, Josh Auer on bass and Joey Marchiano on drums. Former members include "Tito" on keyboards, Bobby "Bobbito the Chef" Duran as disc jockey, Ethan Luck on guitar, Dan Sessum on guitar, and David Tosti's younger brother Aaron "Skwid" Tosti on drums, who eventually played in Hawk Nelson. The band began in 1999 and broke up in 2005.

PAX217 was similar in sound to 311, Skindred, Christian rock peers Earthsuit and P.O.D. PAX217 released two albums: Twoseventeen (2000) and Engage (2002), and was signed to Forefront Records. They also released an EP titled Check Your Pulse in 2004 independently. Dave Tosti's rapping was compared to that of fellow Christian rocker Sonny Sandoval. Former members include "Tito" on keyboards, Bobby "Bobbito the Chef" Duran as disc jockey, Ethan Luck on the guitar or drums, Dan Sessum on guitar, Frank Ortiz (lead vocals), and Lance Lathrop on drums. The band members (except David Tosti) went on to form the pop punk band Avner. David Tosti is now pursuing photography, covering primarily weddings, engagements, and some editorial work. The name of his company is TOSTI STUDIOS.

Pax (goddess)

Pax (Latin for Peace), more commonly known in English as Peace, was the Roman goddess of peace, the equivalent of the Greek Eirene. Worship of Peace was organized as a goddess during the rule of Augustus. On the Campus Martius, she had a temple called the Ara Pacis and another temple on the Forum Pacis. She was depicted in art with olive branches, a cornucopia and a scepter. There was a festival in her honor on January 3. The daughter of Jupiter and Justice, Peace was often associated with spring.
