KWWL (TV)

KWWL is the NBC-affiliated television station in Waterloo, Iowa, and serves as the primary NBC affiliate for the northeastern third of the state of Iowa, including 21 counties and the larger cities of Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Iowa City. The station operates on VHF channel 7. KWWL is owned by Quincy Newspapers. The station's studios are located on East 4th Street in Waterloo, Iowa and its transmitter is located at the AFLAC Tower north of Rowley, Iowa.

KWWL also operates newsrooms and sales offices in Cedar Rapids and Dubuque. Syndicated programs aired by KWWL include Meredith Vieira, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, The Doctors and The Real.

Digital television

At one point, KWWL carried a weather channel called KWWL Weather Plus on their second digital subchannel. After NBC bought The Weather Channel, NBC Weather Plus network feeds ended in December 2008; the station now carries This TV on the subchannel. KWWL also transmitted The Tube digital music video channel until the network ceased operations on October 1, 2007. It later carried RTV on DT3. On April 27, 2011, the station replaced RTV programming in favor of Me-TV.

KPTY (AM)

KPTY (1330 AM, "107.3 The Party") is a radio station serving the Waterloo/Cedar Falls metropolitan area with a top 40/CHR format. It broadcasts on AM frequency 1330 kHz and is under ownership of NRG Radio, LLC.

History

On June 12, 1947, the Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit to Black Hawk Broadcasting Company for a radio station in Waterloo, Iowa. Less than five months later, Black Hawk President R.J. McElroy made the launch of KWWL a reality. The station began broadcasting on AM frequency 1320, operating at 1,000 watts of power in studio space once occupied by WMT-AM in the Hotel Russell Lamson. The dial setting changed to 1330 a short time later, operating at 5,000 watts. KWWL was a very popular Top 40 station until the format moved to co-owned sister station KFMW in 1982. KWLO's format moved to Adult Contemporary and evolved into Full Service. After KWLO and KFMW were purchased by Bahakel Communications in 1996, the Adult Standards format that was on KXEL moved to KWLO. For a time, it was syndicating a combined Oldies/Adult Standards format courtesy of Citadel Media's "Timeless" satellite feed. With that network's demise on February 13, 2010, KWLO slightly tweaked their format and switched over to Dial Global's Kool Gold Oldies network. On July 1, 2012, KWLO's format changed to sports.

KFMW

KFMW (107.9 FM), known as "Rock 108", is a radio station based in Waterloo, Iowa. The station has an active rock format. Its signal is transmitted from the AFLAC Tower north of Rowley, Iowa.

History

KFMW came on the air in November 1968 as KWWL-FM and was originally owned by Black Hawk Broadcasting Company of Waterloo. It was one of two radio stations owned by Black Hawk Broadcasting's NBC affiliate, KWWL-TV, and for approximately 10 years, KWWL-FM/KFMW programmed an instrumental music format of what was called "beautiful music" by some and "elevator music" by most. It ran this format until the early 1980s when it was flipped to a contemporary hit radio format. It remained a CHR format until approximately 1992 when it was given its current name, "Rock 108." The station was essentially a classic rock station for a few years, morphed into an alternative rock format for a time in the mid-1990s, and eventually began an active rock stance in the late 1990s which it remains today.

The station was sold by Black Hawk Broadcasting to Forward Broadcasting in the early 1980s, sold to Park Broadcasting in the late 1980s, to Bahakel Communications based in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1996, to Woodward Communications of Dubuque, Iowa in 2012, and to NRG Radio, LLC in 2014.
