K-LOVE is an adult contemporary Christian music radio programming service in the United States operated by the Educational Media Foundation. As of January 2011, K-LOVE's programming is carried on over 440 FM stations and translators in 45 states.[1] K-LOVE claims an audience of 250,000 people each week via the Internet and more than 5 million listeners weekly on the radio network. Some of the most listened to K-LOVE stations are in Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, Kansas City and San Antonio each averaging between 200-400 thousand listeners each week.[2]

Its studios and offices are located in Rocklin, California, near Sacramento.[3] The morning show broadcasts from Indianapolis, Indiana, as of November 2009. The service uses a number of "primary" FM signals to provide broadcast feeds to other stations and translators.

The station plays artists such as MercyMe, NEEDTOBREATHE, Third Day, Brandon Heath, Steven Curtis Chapman, tobyMac, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, David Crowder Band, Jason Castro, Francesca Battistelli, The Museum Tenth Avenue North, Jamie Grace, For King and Country, Matt Hammitt, Sanctus Real, Jason Gray, Matt Kearny, Big Daddy Weave and Newsboys, among others.

K-LOVE has a news team that provides national and regional stories as well as positive stories that may not be heard anywhere else.[4] In addition to the news, K-LOVE has a weekly program called Closer Look that discusses topics more in depth. One of the closer look segments is the Pastors Roundtable that features K-LOVE pastors.[5]

History [link]

K-LOVE began as a single radio station, KCLB-FM (now KLVR),[6] in 1982, in Santa Rosa, California as a result of the efforts of a former San Francisco disc jockey, Bob Anthony (Fogal).

In 1988, coverage expanded after the transmitter was moved to a better location following a fire that destroyed 9,000 acres (36 km2) around the original transmitter site. Encouraged by public support, KCLB became K-LOVE Radio in 1988, and additional stations were licensed and began operating.[3][7]

In 1999, K-LOVE and Christian contemporary hit radio (CHR) broadcasting chain Air 1 were combined under the Parent Organization named Educational Media Foundation. Air 1 targets a younger listener crowd than K-LOVE.

On October 5, 2000, Colorado Christian University sold KWBI Morrison/Denver, KJOL Grand Junction and KDRH Glenwood Springs as well as 18 translators to K-LOVE.[8] The Colorado radio network was sold for a reported $16.6 million. A Colorado Christian University release said the board considered "many offers from Christian, as well as other suitors," but the priority was finding a buyer committed to "top-quality Christian programming."[9] KWBI is now KLDV, and is one of K-LOVE's most listened to signals.[10]

K-LOVE uses a network of satellite fed FM stations and broadcast translators to carry the signal across much of the United States. Almost all of K-LOVE FM translators (FM Radio Stations) across the nation do carry RDS/RDBS-EON service. Analog FM radios in RDS/RDBS mode will get radio information displayed on most K-LOVE stations. K-LOVE stations are owned by EMF. Because EMF is a non-profit entity, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted waivers of the requirement that each station have a local studio in the community of service. Only one FM station in Tucson, AZ USA supports HD Radio, KLTU 88.1-HD1 K-LOVE and 88.1-HD2 Air1.

On October 1, 2007, Mike Novak was named CEO and President of EMF, K-LOVE, and Air 1, replacing Dick Jenkins, founder of EMF Broadcast Networks.[11]

On March 28, 2009, it was announced that Jon and Sherry Rivers would no longer be hosting K-LOVE's popular morning show, due to family issues. Host Lisa Williams assumed the duties of hosting the program, and was later joined by Eric Allen. It is unknown if Jon and Sherry will return to K-LOVE. In a letter posted on K-LOVE's website, Jon and Sherry said their sudden departure was due to Jon's addiction to pain pills for headaches that had gone on for the previous couple of years.[12]

In April 2009, K-LOVE became available as an "app" for the iPhone to further enhance listener availability to the programming. Apps for the Android and Blackberry devices were added in May and October 2010 respectively.

In May 2011, K-LOVE came on the air on WKLV Port Chester, which covers New York City. The WKLV signal originates from a new transmitter site atop the Trump Plaza building in New Rochelle. This is now the largest market that K-LOVE can be heard in.[13]

In July 2011, K-LOVE Morning Show announced that Lisa Williams and Eric Allen would no longer be hosting the K-LOVE Morning Show. J.D. Chandler took their place until the current K-LOVE Morning Show with Craig, Amy, and Kankelfritz acquired the spot in November 2011. Another change occurred when Sterling had a position change from K-LOVE Mid-Day to Air 1. Amanda took her place.

December 2011 K-LOVE slightly changed the line up with new times and a new show between Scott and Kelli and Larry's Shows

February 2012 - Legendary Top 40 radio station WABB-FM Mobile, AL has entered into an agreement to be acquired by EMF (Educational Media Foundation) of Rocklin, CA, a not-for-profit organization.

The pastors and staff at K-LOVE pray for over 1,000 prayer requests every day, and on average, intervene in one suicide case per day.[14][15] People can submit prayer requests online or over the phone.[16]

K-LOVE also partners with other ministries and donates air time and web site space to them. Some of the ministries include International Cooperating Ministries, Compassion International, Food For The Hungry, World Vision and Faith Comes By Hearing.[17]

Finances [link]

K-LOVE is governed by the Educational Media Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit ministry. No individual owns any stock in the corporation, which is held for charitable purposes. The Board of Directors at large serve without compensation for rotating four-year terms, and a person with supervisory accounting experience holds one of the board positions.[18]

In addition, EMF is a member of the Evangelical Council on Financial Accountability (ECFA). Founded by Billy Graham, the ECFA oversees EMF's financial affairs, ethics and reporting standards.[19]

EMF is recognized by Charity Navigator with a Four Star rating, the highest given to charities. In addition, EMF is audited yearly by an independent accounting firm, ensuring accuracy and completeness of its books and records.

Charity Navigator also reports K-LOVE's CEO Mike Novak makes $463,420, including bonuses, as of 2010. K-LOVE station are licensed as NCE (non-commercial educational license) radio stations. Therefore, most of K-LOVE's funding is provided by donations. The majority of donations are made during seasonal pledge drives (usually in the spring and in the fall).[20]
