K. N. Kesari

Dr K. N. Kesari (1875 – 8 June 1953) was an Indian physician, social reformer, philanthropist, author, magazine editor and patron of music. His Kesari Kuteeram Ayurveda Oushadasala, an ayurvedic medicine manufacturing unit which also featured a music academy, was a landmark in Madras (now Chennai).

He was born in Inamanamelloor in Ongole District of present-day Andhra Pradesh as Kota Narasimham. His father died when he was five years old. His mother faced severe hardships during his childhood. At the age of 11, he went to Madras city. The story of his childhood was published in his memoir, Na Chinnanati Muchchatlu (Memories of my Childhood).

Kesari succeeded in getting a scholarship to the Hindu Theological School and studied there. His mother joined him in 1889. She died after falling ill for a few days.

In 1928 he founded and became editor of the Telegu magazine Gruhalakshmi, which encouraged women to engage in society and politics, fostered writing talent in women and sponsored the Gruhalakshmi Swarnakankanam award for women writers.

Kán

Kán is the name of a Hungarian noble family which gave bans (governors) to Croatia and Slavonia, voivodes to Transylvania, and palatines to Hungary in the 13th and 14th centuries.

History

The Kán family were members of the Hermány clan. They crossed the Carpathian mountains together with Árpád, leader of the Magyars, and settled in Pannonia in 895. They were Counts of Siklós from the year 900.

Kèn

The kèn is an instrument used in traditional Vietnamese music. It has a double reed and a conical wooden body. It produces a powerful and penetrating high-pitched sound, similar to the Chinese suona, the Korean taepyeongso, and the Persian/Indian shehnai.

The best-known player of the kèn is the award-winning musician Nguyễn Ngọc Khánh (b. 1956), who is acknowledged as a "national treasure" in Vietnam, where he is known as "Khánh of the kèn."
