K'Nex

K'NEX (a variation of connects) is a construction toy system invented by Joel Glickman. Introduced to the U.S. in 1992, K'NEX is currently designed and produced by K'NEX Industries Inc. of Hatfield, Pennsylvania. K'NEX is in the same genre, and in competition with, Lego, Fischertechnik, and Meccano.

Most similar to Tinkertoy, the toy's building system consists of interlocking plastic rods, connectors, gears, wheels, and other components, which can be pieced together to form a wide variety of models, machines, and architectural structures. Unlike Tinkertoy, however, K'NEX is designed for older (5- to 12-year-old) builders.

The toy has been released and marketed in various stores, as well as online websites. K'NEX has released various sets, educational kits, and models consisting of assorted parts, the last of which includes parts and instructions specifically packaged to be assembled into a specific model.

History

Early years

The concept behind K’NEX was originally conceived by Joel Glickman. While he was at a wedding, he started thinking of what he could do with his straw if he could connect it with other straws. He and his brother Bob Glickman discussed the idea and started the K’NEX company. The original building system kept very closely to the idea that Joel Glickman had: The K’NEX building system is simply Rods and Connectors which can be easily attached together to make different things. Other parts such as wheels and pulleys are also included to allow more flexibility in construction. The first K’NEX Box was launched in the U.S. market in 1993. Original models with moving parts had a handcrank to make things move, but soon, gears and motors allowed models to move on their own.

Nex (stylized as "nex") is a super regional suburban shopping mall in Serangoon, within the North-East Region of Singapore. The largest mall in the North East Corridor and one of the largest suburban malls in the country, it has an integrated air-conditioned Serangoon Bus Interchange, the fifth bus interchange in Singapore which is air-conditioned.

History

Nex was built on an empty plot of land 25,007.70 square metres in size directly above Serangoon MRT station, and was envisaged to better utilise land use by incorporating the existing Serangoon Bus Interchange which neighbours the new mall and takes up a relatively large area of land. The land was on the Government Land Sale Programme Reserve List and was first put on public tender by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in 2003 as a 99-year leasehold white site, but it was not awarded. The LTA relaunched the site again on 7 December 2007 and when the tender closed on 26 March 2008, six bids were received, namely Gold Ridge Pte Ltd for $800,900,000.00, Serangoon Community Developments Pte Ltd for $727,000,000.00, FC Retail Trustee Pte Ltd (unit of Frasers Centrepoint) for $706,138,888.00, a joint venture comprising HSBC Institutional Trust Services (Singapore) Limited (trustee for CapitaMall Trust), NTUC Income Insurance Co-Operative Limited and NTUC Fairprice Co-Operative Limited for $660,926,828.00, a joint venture between City Ridgeview Pte Ltd (unit of City Developments), Hong Leong Holdings Limited and TID Pte Ltd for $401,000,000.00 and Peak Star Pte Ltd for $215,000,000.00. The land with a maximum gross floor area (GFA) of 87,527.00 square metres is thus awarded to Gold Ridge Pte Ltd on 28 March 2008 as the top bidder at a tendered price of S$9,150.32 per square metre of GFA.

Nexø

Nexø, sometimes spelled Neksø, is a town on the east coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark. With a population of 3,642 (as of 1 January 2015), it is the second largest town, as well as the largest fishing port on the island. Fishing is the mainstay of the town's economy. Nexø is also the site of a distillery (Bornholmske Spiritfabrik ApS) and a mustard factory (Bornholmersennep ApS). The town is also a port of call for the passenger ferries linking Bornholm with Kołobrzeg, Darłowo, and Ustka in Poland.Dueodde, the largest beach on Bornholm, is located south of Nexø, in the southeastern corner of the island.

Etymology

"Nexø" is possibly a combination of the Old Norse elements "nøkke", meaning Nix or water spirit, and "sæ" (sea). It was first documented in 1346 as Nexe.

History

Nexø originated as a fishing village for the parish of Bodilsker with a chapel attached to St Bodil's Church. In 1346, it was granted rights as a market town, dealing in both the herring trade and in agricultural products. Over the centuries the town has suffered a number of disasters. The Lübeckers burnt the town in 1510, in 1563 most of the inhabitants died from the plague and in 1645 it was plundered by 500 Swedish soldiers. In 1756 there was another serious fire and in 1872 a storm damaged the harbour.
